I was wondering if anyone here has ever had problems with kidney stones. I have had 4 in the past year. They are agonizingly painful. I have been home now for 4 days in pain and will see a specialist tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone has had a problem like this and what did you do about it to get relief. So far the doctors tell me they are small and I must just pass them out. Has anyone had any procedure that worked? If so , please let me know. Thanks.

anyone with kidney stones?

I never had them but my ex did so I realize how painful they can be for you. You need to discuss with your doctor any ways he would suggest to stop them from forming in the first place. Could be diet or something else. If the doctor says they are small enough to pass, that is good. I know it doesn't relieve your pain right now. Sometimes, if they are too large, they have to be surgically removed but, as I understand it, that's a last resort. I have also heard some talk about non-invasive laser treatment to get rid of them but I would think if you were a candidate for that, the doctor would have mentioned it. Sorry for your pain. I know what you're going through. They WILL pass. Do see if there is any preventive things you can do in the future so they don't form again...even any type of medication. The doctor should have some options for you if there are any.

I've had them for years, the first time I thought I was goning to die and then they almost killed me with th IVP - turns out I am extremely allergic to the iodine used in that test. I've never had surgery, but I get attacks with enough regularity that I can usually tell when one in coming - drink lots of water and learn to live with it, that sounds harsh, but what else are you going to do?
I've had kidney stones twice. The first time was about 7 years ago, and the next time was just a few months ago. Definitely drink plenty of water, but also have a doctor tell you dietary things to avoid. This last time, I learned from the doctor that chicken (which I eat a TON of) actually contributes to kidney stones. So you might wanna check that out.
This last time I also discovered a product which didn't exist the first time I got kidney stones. It's called Uriflow. You have my sympathy and empathy. I've had small ones I have passed with no problem and one bout that had me on morphine until they worked through.
If they're small enough to pass, they will. If you watch the series Deadwood, it is one of the times you'll sympathize with Al Swearingen.

just want to sympathize with you on the pain. I understand it is worse than childbirth. an old joke here was that the first half of the time you're passing the stone - it hurts so much you're afraid you're gonna die. and the second half of the time, it hurts so much you're afraid you won't die. i hope they never happen to me. truly hope whatever works will work for you. god bless you.
There are several non-invasive procedures that may rid you of the stones. There are some medications that may help dissolve them, as well as an ultra-sonic prococedure that can blast the suckers apart. If surgery is the only option, be sure to have the stone analyzed to find out what may have caused it. Mine turned out to be calcium based; had to cut down on the cheese and ice cream...
And yes, the pain is extremely intense. It was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my 36 years of life.

water... water... and water. Talk to your doctor about dietary needs as mentioned. I'm leary of uriflow as I can't find what's in it and the wording about FDA approval tends to tell me it isn't. I can't find the ingredients or anything else. But I didn't spend a lot of time I'll admit. The pain IS terrible so my sympathies. But ask your doctor about the things to do to prevent it... sometimes you just can't prevent them no matter what you do. But drink lots of water.
Have had them for years and can be rather painful for sure. Got a couple hung up for a couple of weeks, first one side and then another. If you are not allergic to NAIDS you can get Aleve over the counter, it is naproxen and taking 750mg at one shot can knock down the pain enough for you to pass the stone. Doesn't always work but most times can. If it doesn't work after the first dose, don't take another Otherwise, toroadol works well, but most of the time it needs to be injected and it is an prescription med.
Other than that, lots of water and avoid foods with oxilates in it, cola, nuts, spinach and there are a few others. The oxilate will form with calcium and form stones. If at all possible, try to get a captured stone so it can be ID, if calcium oxilate avoid the foods mentioned. If phospherous oxilate, have the parathyroid gland checked as that is an indication they are caused by a metabolic process and would need different treatment.
Recent study revealed drinking lemonade daily was a preventative measure as the citrate in the lemonade prevents formation of stones in the kidney.
Newer method of intervention is use of laser to break up the stones. Ultrasound has been found to cause damage to the kidney. If at all possible you would want to avoid the intervention, but if one gets hung up, there may be no choice.
Most often kidney function returns to normal after the passing of the stone and appears to not have longterm affects on the kidney.

well , an update for you guys. I saw the doctor on Thursday and had surgery on Friday. They did an ureteroscopy. The doctor said the stone was embedded in the ureter and wasn't going anywhere. They ridded both kidneys of all stones by pulling them out and by laser. I am back home today feeling much relief just soreness. I go back to the doctor soon for a checkup and she is going to do some tests to see what is causing them to form so we can try to stop that. I am aware of Uriflow. I started taking it a month ago when I had the last stone which I passed. So I had just taken a months supply when this stone hit. Not sure how I feel about the product now, I have another bottle but not sure if I am going to take it. Thank you guys for all your good wishes and comments. I hope now I can figure out with my doctor how to stay free of stones. I sympathize with everyone who has experienced this or will. Best wishes.
