AOL = Badware

I'm guessing the new AIM Triton Messenger would also be considered badware. That piece of shit installed 3 other programs with it when I first got it, about four months ago. Horrible horrible shit. I stuck to Gaim. ^_^

I had AOL once...never again. It took months to get my computer straightened out with all the issues they have.

But....

AOL has been doing all of these things since it was first released....

Why is this only being made official now?

Isn't Gator a subsiduary of AOL?
many of who's programs are auto instaled by AOL downloads?
and many of who's programs cant be removed because you can't remove X unless you first remove Y
and you can't remove Y unless you first remove X

Last time I needed to uninstall AOL softwear I had to get a spy bot destroyer to do it for me!

That stuf just keeps reinstaling itself!

I tolerate Triton, though I was glad to get rid of AOL... especially after the guy pulled up my info and said "Why leave when you've logged so many hours this past month?"

well maybe nobody dared to say that before or so? i always hated it ;)
oh and i prefer gaim, too. apart from that really noboy here uses aim ;)

i had noticed ages ago that AOL stuff didn't uninstall completely, that it installed stuff without telling me, and that i couldn't "not" update if i wanted the damn thing to keep working!

i wish we'd see this on the news or on Cnet or something like that.

I always remember jokes in the Star Trek chat rooms- The Borg on AOL: ">Ding!< We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. ~Error: You are not currently running on the optimized version. This program will terminate until you download the updates."

I swear AOL was the reason my first hard drive crashed.

T-Rexx, AOL's browser never worked for me, so I was looking at JUB via IE.

So the gay porn, the food network, and the home and garden network websites weren't helping me come off as straight?

I didn't care that AOL knew what I looked at, I was more pissed that the guy was demanding a reason as to why I was deleting my account. And I refused to cave and say "because AIM is the only thing I use and it's free"

My niece stupidly installed the new free AOL software a couple of weeks ago because her kids were whining for it. Even after I told her the software was crap she still did it. She has a DSL connection with a perfectly good ISP. Well after about 2 hours of fiddling with it after install and having things go screwy with the computer she called me. I spent a good 2 hours the next day getting all the AOL software off the system. I uninstalled it but it left 4 functions still running in the background even after reboot and the AOL directory was gone. I found 3 other AOL programs that it had installed separately that had to be uninstalled and still there were 2 functions running in the background. I found where the software had imbedded those files and tried to delete them but couldn't while they were running and I when I tried to disable them through MSCONFIG they started right back up immediately. I finally had to do a "SAFE MODE" startup so I could get at those files before they started up, and then I went into the registry to search for stray AOL files and found hundreds that were still on the computer. It took forever to get all that crap deleted.

I logged on to the AOL software before I deleted it to see if there was any difference in the free version and the regular version. It looks pretty much the same but the chat rooms (which is what 99% of everyone seems to want AOL for) is blocked on the free version.

Hopefully AOL will be out of business within the next year or so.
