Apple 10.6 (Snow Leopard) - Full Review by PC Magazine

Damn Henry Ford for not including wings and propellers on the Model T!

That's a poor comparison. He was not talking about adding an extra antenna to the iPhone, it is more like Henry Ford would forbid you to change the tires. And yes, that's also not a perfect comparision - simply because a Ford T has no "software" ;)

Every other week? How many friends do you have to hear them complain every other week? Do they number 26 to cover a single year, or 260 to cover a decade? And how many have lost the rights to even listen to their own music? On their own computers? 260? Care to explain how? Maybe 100,000 viruses.

I've purchased music from iTunes. I haven't lost the rights to any of it, especially on my own computer. How did they lose their "rights" every other week or even every other year when there's no DRM? Besides, you live in Montreal where there is no law against downloading music and where no one is concerned about losing their "rights" to it. I call bullshit. Also? In relation to what? BMWs?Yeah. Just like everything else ever manufactured in the history of the world. Damn Henry Ford for not including wings and propellers on the Model T!

Hey, gang! Astroturf's up!

Ipods::
750 facebook contacts. every week someone different post a status update to the effect that "FUCK i lost all my music on ipod" or "i can't play my music on my own computer!!!arg!".... at which point i tell them they could get an mp3 player with the same memory capacity, at half the price, sounds better, doesn't need to "synchronize" as its drag and drop, and is totally DRM FREE.

Then again, most homos don't care about features and technical specs, they just think apple makes a great fashion statement.

Iphones::
overpriced in comparison to other touch screen phones which offer the same features.

And when i say limited, i mean that, technically speaking, the phones are capable of so much more of what they "officially" can do, only because, apple decides FOR YOU, what applications you are allowed to have on your own god damn property. (http://torrentfreak.com/utorrent-iphone-app-rejected-by-apple-goes-underground-090831/)

To equate my arguement to your poor analogy, lets say Honda were to manufacture a car who's engine only worked on gas purchased Shell stations. You'd be like "wtf, its my car, i'll fill up where i want".

I know the internet is supposed to be anonymous, but i would still suggest you do homework before you make an ass of yourself.

I've had an iPod since the 1st generation 10 gig. Now have a Pod Touch. I also have an iPhone. Never had a problem. There are over 50,000 apps available and a huge number are free. The ones you pay for seem reasonably priced. All of my friends tell me the blackberry apps are very expensive. Apple must be doing something right because all the others are copying the app store concept. As far as losing all your tunes in iTunes, there are apps for both Mac and pc that let you copy your pod back to iTunes. They are free. Google or check the tech forum for older posts.
I think your problem may be related to Facebook. It seems to be the only constant in this equation.
If you have a pod and are having problems with it, search the older posts. If nothing found post a specific problem including which model, which computer, which OS, version of iTunes etc and I am sure we will try to help you. If we can't, call apple.
A general venting of your spleen in the Tech forum is a waste of readers time and doesn't help you with your problem.

Click "manage manually" in iTunes to drag and drop files directly into your iPhone/iPod. All music in iTunes is DRM free. iPods are not limited to music from iTunes, you can add DRM-free files from most other sources.

There are dozens of free tools available to rip music back off our iPod/iPhone. It sounds like your "friends" are doing something silly...

Then again, most homos don't care about features and technical specs, they just think apple makes a great fashion statement.

50 million iPod Touch and iPhones sold in 26 months. It's not just the homos doing the shopping, baby. ;)

Many, including me, would dispute your claim. I've yet to use a touchscreen device with the same fluidity and accuracy. Blackberry's are clunky, Nokia's latest are plasticy and slow. None offer the enormous range of free and cheap apps.

So jailbreak it. Or buy something else. Apple has a reputation for intuitive interfaces and reliable hardware. That reputation is maintained by guarding their software architecture, and by controlling parts of what third party providers can do. If you don't like it, jailbreak the phone and don't complain if it fucks up. Easy.

To equate my arguement to your poor analogy, lets say Honda were to manufacture a car who's engine only worked on gas purchased Shell stations. You'd be like "wtf, its my car, i'll fill up where i want".

A better analogy would be if you bought a Honda that ran on hi-octane gasoline, but you chose to run it with regular gasoline. Sure it'll still run, but if it breaks down Honda might not honor your warranty.

Excuse me andysayshi.

I'd like a little more clarification on that. That is a regret I have with iTunes. I'd prefer to do drag and drop. I had no idea iTunes had it.

And as for the ORIGINAL TOPIC.

I bought Leopord and it's awesome. I love Quicktime X. Screen capture is amazing and Quicktime X plays [STRIKE]more porn[/Strike] more video files than before.

It is much faster though. Especially loading iWork applications. It is really just refinements though. But they are good refinements. Plus I love the snow leopard wallpaper.

Follow the red arrow. Once active, you can drag and drop files from iTunes, or directly from the Finder, onto the iPod/iPhone icon in the left column. Note that the first time you do this, the iPod will need to re-apply your whole library, so be sure to have a current backup of everything before you do it.

Already that is stupid.
And after that you still need iTunes ... thanks but I have my music sorted perfectly. All I need to do is to throw the folder on my mp3 player. UNLESS it's an iPod ](*,) then I need some huge big ass buggy and slow media player for it ..

I just don't understand that criticism. As one of the largest retailers of music and video on Earth, Apple have no choice but to protect the rights of their software providers (music, TV and film companies) as best they can. Jobs wrote an open letter to the music industry a few years ago which resulted in the total removal of DRM from their music library. It's clear what Apple wants, and what Apple is allowed to do, are two different things. Microsoft has encumbered us with plenty of DRM madness as well, for exactly the same reasons.

But if you don't want to use iTunes, just don't! There are literally dozens of other free or cheap tools that allow you to avoid iTunes altogether, on every platform.

This is not about DRM .. this is about iTunes which you SHOULD use to manage your iPod. Everything else is unofficial and not wanted by Apple, probably even illegal in the US

Sorry corny and others. This thread is not about DRM or iTunes. Read the title.

As far as I know the new iTunes DID ship with snow leopard, and half of the people here is mainly talking about applications (rather than the OS) anyway .. right?

Fair point, apologies for the digression.

To get back to topic, I've installed SL on 3 machines now, and I gotta say it's the most seamless and straightforward OS upgrade I've ever made on any platform. Whats more, the upgrade is really tangible - everything is much tighter and punchier (except WMV files in Quicktime, which seem a bit more clunky than usual).

They could still use a cut/paste function in the Finder. And I think they could've added just one or two BIG new features to appease the masses. But overall, great upgrade, worth every cent I paid.

Of course we all know that no OS is, or ever will be, perfect, so from this point of view: are there features on OSX that you would like to see implemented on Windows?

Most of the "under the hood" stuff that rarely any apple fanboi ever cares about :)
GCD is a great concept that many other OS could need, and the good thing here is apple is releasing it as Open Source (I guess they used some OS code in it, and that's why they have to). OpenCL *could* become interesting but there are so many concepts like that already .. time will tell.

Oh! You have 750 . . . friends , all of them Facebook morons who post only on alternate weeks — and the same alternate weeks.

Wow. the power of your aguements is simply leaving me in awe.

Now these are good arguements but you essentially prove my point: Apple products involve a lot more hassle than you would get with any other competitor's products.

Sales figures won't really convince me either. Alot more people buy Windows and i don't agree with that. Nor does Bush getting the presidency make him a good president.

Your astroturfing "facts" are jaw-dropping.

They must be because you weren't able to argue any of my points, you just made some obtuse remark about my facebook contacts (mostly local gay guys around my age) all being morons, which doesn't really change the fact that i read more complaints about Ipods and Itunes than i do praises.

It's really easy to see the negativity in things. To see someone go "OMG this iPod sucks fuck it" and hear some other's say something similar. Yet, while you are listening to these negative people say these things elsewhere some people are really enjoying their iPods, iPhones, and take care of them and enjoy them.

You aren't wrong that Apple's products require a bit more hassle than competitors. Such as macs. If you are coming from windows you need to copy all your stuff to a mac (apple employees can do it for you to) or use vmware or bootcamp. To load boot camp you need a windows installation disc and you have to go through the tedious and delicate installation process.

And with the iPhone. You have to get used to using the touch keyboard and like with any iPod using iTunes. If you don't want to use iTunes you have to try another program and see if it works and do much more than you should have to.

Yet with a cheap knock off MP3 player you can drag and drop, have a small display, and that's it...

There is truth that Apple does make things complicated and restrict a lot. But as andysayshi it's for good reason. The iPhone is an amazing device and despite the complications with it and the shitness that is AT&T and having to jailbreak to fully unlock it's potential I love the phone.

And with iTunes. I used to not like it but I like it more now, have gotten used to it, and buy some songs or rent some movies from there sometimes. It is a bit annoying to do the sync thing without the drag and drop. Although now I know how to get around that.

But the point is even though it's more hassle and complicated it is VERY MUCH WORTH IT. I think that's what you are having trouble understanding. Kinda like how with 360 you need an ethernet plug or a wireless adapter to connect online. And than you have to deal with cleaning your discs alot or getting a disc cleaner since the 360 has been proven to scratch discs because microsoft refused to put in a small fee to fix them for each console.

Those are problems that not everyone would want to deal with. But people deal with problems or complications if something is worth it. It's apparent that Apple products aren't worth it for you. You've made that point.

Going back on topic.

I think with Snow Leopard at the keynote the guy said that a cool feature of snow leopard is if you are using safari the page doesn't freeze as much anymore. What it does is cancel loading what was caused the freeze on the page and all you have to do is reload to fix it. Instead of waiting for the umbrella of death to go away.

I haven't noticed my computer freezing in Safari at all anymore but I haven't come across that cool fix for the freeze yet. Has anyone else?

Also I've noticed that Safari is much faster now. Before I wasn't using Safari 4 but it came with Snow Leopard and the speed just amazes me. I did hear something about it taking up more battery life though.

I might be wrong about this. But I think there are some more finger gestures too with the track pad. But that might have just been part of Leopard.

But still loving snow leopard.

I think if you jailbreaked your iPhone you lose the right to call it an "awesome product" because you are not using the product anymore.

I installed snow leopard the day it came out on my Mac Pro Quad and an iMac (latest version). The install on the iMac was interrupted by a power failure but when rebooted the install continued. No problems at all. I was impressed. However on the Pro I have 3 HD's. One is my current startup, a 250 gig, another - a 500 seagate which was a warranty replacement for the bad batch and was cloned to the startup drive just before SN install. Other one is a 1 terabyte Time Machine backup disk. My problem is I can't select a different startup drive from System Prefs > startup disk. The clone is greyed out. The work around is rebooting with the option key held down so I get the boot manager and I can select it from there. It was important as Quickbooks 2009 wasn't yet SN compatible. It is now. I have reported this to Apple and have a open case on it. It doesn't appear to be a general problem. Have any of you guys had this problem?

Well it depends on what you do with jailbreak. You could really just jailbreak the iPhone and not use Cydia or anything. Although that would be pointless.

I don't think there is much reason to jailbreak anymore because as you said "Apple's Product" has improved greatly. But before the app store came along there was already apps on installer and even some games and it was amazing.

If AT&T just gives us fucking text. Thank god that's tomorrow. Jailbreak will always be around for the iPhone though because of apple's restrictions of some apps and the fact that there is so much potential with the iPhone people want to unlock it. And that's not a bad thing.

I do think Apple has been a bit extreme claiming that jailbreaking will end the world (literally) and things like that.

Even without jailbreaking the iPhone is awesome right now. I wonder what 4.0 will bring. But tomorrow will bring MMS.

Thank GOD.

Can't say I've had that problem. I don't have use time machine. I should though.

The only good reason to jailbreak one is so you can use it on a network other than the one it was made for. You may have problems upgrading it's operating system which will leave you with less options.

As for price $99. for an 8 gig iPhone 3G isn't expensive. I paid that for a moto razr and a hell of alot more for a Sony Ericcson W810 which had a 2 hour battery life when playing MP3's. If $99. is too much look for a refurb at $49.
