Apple introduces iOS4 & iPhone 4

That is a moronic response from Apple. Do these companies NOT have PR departments? Who authorised that kind of a letter to issue?!

Well, the letter is aimed directly at customers that have already bought iPhones. One thing you have to understand is that Apple treats customers that have already bought their products as a 'family' of sorts. (the part of the store that sells cases and accessories is even called the 'family room') So, when they send out press releases geared towards those people, they're not going to be the same stuffy PR crap that they would otherwise use. The use of that casual, colloquial language is intentional.

^ :rotflmao: No dock for you! That's amazing!

Apple is the new Microsoft!

^ ^ the author of the linked article strikes me as an idiot.. so he buys an adapter meant for the universal dock, except that the one he owns is a different one, one specific to the 3G/3GS model one and not the universal one... and the genius is surprised that he can't make it fit.

The universal adapter, according to a variety of sources, does work except it gives off an incompatibility warning, which is not very well done by Apple...

The funny thing is that the new iPhone will fit and work with the old old dock... the original one that you couldn't use anymore with the 3G/3GS models

^ his point is that this is basically the SAME connection, the same cable etc pp. they are artificially made incompatible.

Let me say THIS about THAT (or borrow)

SteveSquared understand this very well.

I know sweetie, but the greater point is that we're discussing a telephone and not the space shuttle... I think it's funny that they were able to sell anyone on the idea of needing or wanting a dock in the first place.

^ his point is that this is basically the SAME connection, the same cable etc pp. they are artificially made incompatible.

No shit they are. He's trying to connect an iPhone 4 to a dock that was only meant for the 3G/3GS. There's a reason it doesn't work. He's a moron.

I have an original Apple universal dock from way back when (seriously, the thing is at least 5 years old), and it works PERFECTLY with my new iPhone using iPhone 1 adapter inserts. The only Apple accessory I've had that didn't work with either my 3G, 3GS or now my 4, is a dual firewire/USB 2.0 sync cable from before Apple started offering USB cables in the box. But the things from 2002, so I should have no expectation it should work since it was meant for different hardware, just like his 3gs dock. So his point is moot. And stupid.

^ that just further proves that the technology did not change at all.

ALL docks COULD be universal. but they have some electronics built in to prevent that.

That dock couldn't be. Its an asinine line of argumentation you're on, because the dock was never meant for anything BUT a 3G/3GS. There's no reason they should be surprised because it was never meant to work together anyways. And there's also the extremely high likelihood that the technology DOESN'T work because of the power requirements of the new iPhone. Case in point; I have a car charger that worked with a 3GS and 3G, and still works with the 4, but just barely. The 4 draws more power and causes more interference when its charging. It works, but I could see why Apple would want to weed out those bad experiences to prevent people from thinking something's wrong. (and just to be clear, EVERY major tech company does something similar.)

lol .. you just proved my point *again*

And yes .. nokia and all the others USED to do that, but since a few years all of them are using universal adapters. partly because they got pressure from the EU that their current business strategy is on purpose for the worst of their customers.

How?

You're saying that it could be used if it weren't for that electronic block, and I'm saying no. The dock was never meant to be used with anything except a 3GS/3G. Just because he wants it to doesn't mean Apple's playing dirty. As I said, the line of argumentation you're on is completely asinine.

We may have to disagree on this one, because you're convinced that Apple is trying to do wrong here, despite evidence to the contrary.

No. Apple is playing dirty when they design a part which is functionally equivalent in every way, except extra circuitry is included for the sole purpose of ensuring it can't be used with different devices. It doesn't excuse Apple just because they realised it was incompatible when they designed it, because they specifically designed the incompatibility.

^ correct. the fact that there equally old, still working universal docks or car adapters proves that there is NO hardware problem between the different phones. but the old "none universal" ones identify themselves through some piece of electronics and the phone refuses to accept them because you should buy a new one or an "universal" one.
