I'll give a little background on my story. My Ipod that I had for over 4 years finally broke down over the summer. I have been without an iPod for almost 2 months now (and it is quite devistating, but I manage). I could have bought a new one but I was gonna wait for the next gen touch to come out. Well, it was announced today and I go from hard to limp in a matter of seconds.

The nano gets a camera and mic and the new touch doesn't?!? I'm sure someone in their PR department got the axe for that flub. I'm guessing that for one reason or another, they couldn't get the camera/mic capabilities up to Apple's standards on the touch so they nixed it all together.

Any thoughts on this?

^ exactly. Be a good apple fanboi and buy an iPhone.
NOW. Monthly coscs? Tssk .. so what :)

Of course they weren't going to put a camera in an iPod Touch. This would totally jeopardize iPhone sales.

DP.

They already make an iPod Touch with a camera and mic in it. It's called an iPhone. :-)

Considering I just got a new crackberry tour, I'm content with my phone atm. It's not my fault my company pays for my cellphone and uses Verizon. So no AT&T for this guy :(. Woe is me.

Oh and I'm not an Apple fanboy. They are just the lesser of two evils.

Zune HD time muthafuckasssss!!!!!!!

Hahaha, I was expecting something better for Steve's return to stage, and it was nothing.

He talked later why there was no camera in the iPod Touch. Steve Jobs said that consumers have told him they don't want it, and that the iPod Touch is a gaming machine/platform.

His words.

Here in Australia, you can just buy 'em outright if you choose to - no plan or contract required.

Ehh. The new processor and gaming gear is pretty beastly. It will certainly be close, but for now the Touch still has the upper hand.

There are a couple very good reasons.

Cost and manufacturing issues are the greatest. The Touch has all of the same innards as the iPhone (minus the radios and camera), in a MUCH smaller case. It simply may have not been possible to fit a camera lens into the case. Sure they could have gone with the shitty VGA cam in the Nano, but that isn't apple's style. It would also have increased costs.

It would have also cannibalized iphone sales to some extent, though that is lesser of a concern. By having the camera on the iphone, they pretty much force people to choose the iphone if they want the camera but still want the iphone OS.

One thing the iPod Touch did get which I'm jealous of is "OPEN GLS". Basically the same power and speed that 3GS has.

Fuckers. I still think it's fair though. I mean we pay what $35 bucks a month for our iPhone bills while the iPod Touch users don't have to pay shit. Although they have to rely on wi-fi. And I love when iTouch users complain "No fair we have to pay for the new firmware update when iPhone users don't :("

I think the iPod Touch is more for gaming and apps though. Most people I know have gotten the iPod Touch for mostly the apps and screen size.

I don't like the iPod Touch. I donno why I just don't

Zune HD time muthafuckasssss!!!!!!!

Except the Zune HD doesn't have a camera either ;)

I wasn't really expecting this camera rumour to eventuate - as Jobs said it'd cost more to include a still camera and would make the device considerably thicker (he said it in context to the nano, but it would apply to the touch too); it makes sense considering if they included one in the touch you'd expect it to take stills and autofocus like the iPhone too. And in the end the iPod touch is being marketed totally differently to the iPhone; one as a cell phone and internet device, the other more towards gaming, music and interactivity.

I will say that even though I have an iPhone and have had my fair share of iPods... that new nano does look mighty fine, if anything it's the built-in FM tuner that's doing it for me, they've packed so many features into it now, it's surprising at how it's still as thin as the old version.

Not really. The Zune HD has the Tegra chip, not the mention the XNA gaming platform to work with.

For the flash Zunes, they already had impressive games, now with a full touch screen and a even more powerful chip in there, it is going to be beastly.

While the Touch has a shitload of games, more than half aren't worth their weight in gold, and the rest are pretty good.

Not to mention the close intergration with the Xbox 360 the Zune HD will have. The Zune and Xbox team is now one team, along with the Windows Mobile and Media Player team.

True, but no one was expecting a camera in the Zune HD. Not initially at least. One of the reasons people thought that the Apple event was being held yesterday was to gain the upper hand on the upcoming Zune HD. Which has garnered a lot of hype and praise from tech journalist who usually love to slam all things Microsoft, and used to joke about the Zune even though it was superior.

I guess Steve Jobs either doesn't care about the Zune, or thinks it's gain of marketshare (oh it will gain marketshare) will be insignificant for Apple to care.

As for the iPod Nano, it isn't even the same category as the Zune HD, it is with the small flash Zunes, but those have been discontinued. The Zune HD has HD radio and the Tegra chip, with an OLED screen, making it better than really anything on the market besides the iPhone maybe.

And an apps store is coming to it.

But it also has mobile Internet Explorer ;)

In all seriousness though, whilst I wouldn't get a Zune HD, I do love that Microsoft is taking a stand against Apple with this device. For one, if it's a success then Apple won't have a choice but to do an overhaul on the iPod touch and give consumers some better features. I honestly think that after 12 months a mere processor and capacity bump is pretty bad. At the moment the iPod touch is selling amazingly, though - the reason the nano had such a radical update is because its sales went down by 7 percent in a single quarter, which is understandably distressing for Apple. But still, as I said, hopefully the Zune HD will cause Apple to reinvigorate the touch sometime soon because I can't see it competing that well with Microsoft's entry with it's paltry update.

Basically, I don't see this "consumers don't want a camera" thing to last very long:

- Jobs once said that people do not want cheap flash-based players because they "get used a few times then get thrown into a drawer"... cue the iPod shuffle that is now well under $100.
- Jobs once said that consumers do not want to watch videos on the small screens provided on iPods and other players... cue the original iPod video and subsequent models with a colour screen; now all screened iPods have video playback capabilities.
- Jobs once said that people do not want in-built FM radio tuners... cue the fifth gen nano.

I can see the exact same thing coming in regards to a camera in the iPod touch.

lol a CNET journalist raved and gushed over the mobile IE browser on the Zune HD.

Whatever they did to IE on the Zune, they need to do on Windows Mobile and Internet Explorer itself.

But we all know Steve will cave. He likes to be taken there dragging and screaming. I think it is more fun for Steve that way.

Wow! I didn't expect my P&M about the touch to turn into something like this. I haven't really looked at the zune before. I remember my friend had one a while back (like 3 years) and it was a pos compared to my ipod. Ill have to take a look at it. Besides the whole Ipod not having a "playlist" (I don't buy that 'genius' crap) is a bit of a let down also.

Worst thing about that .. the iPod nano does NOT let your random-play a playlist. only ALL the mp3s on it.
i wonder if they will fix that for the new version, since any crap EUR 10 mp3 player from the supermarket can do that ..

A bit off topic, corny you still skinny dipping? If so, can I takes pics with my non-existant camera on an ipod touch? No...? aww...
