Apple stops Boot Camp downloads

@ wascallywabbit - you sound just like a fundamentalist - making up excuses for your religion when holes are found in it. A beta is a beta - now you want us to believe that there are special (not ordinary) betas and that Apple isn't screwing anyone because Apple can do no wrong no matter how many people come up with issues - even Apple users. I've seen dozens of iPods fail, I saw a Mac Book fail in a class last year (it was only a few months old), a quick Google shows me thousands of unhappy Apple product users. But Apple can do no wrong - whereas Microsoft can do no right - go figure, no disconnect there guys.

It's funny - when I was a born-again Christian we use to get former drug addicts and Satan worshippers and put them up on stage to say how bad life had been until they converted - Apple fanbois have the same modus operandi all over the web (including cutie Jeremiah) - of course there's nothing in that, sure there isn't?

Whoa, ok. Thanks for that. And all just for suggesting that it might be a bit unfair to compare a browser beta to a feature preview from an unreleased OS. I didn't even say I agreed with this move. (I don't.) And I'm pretty sure I've never said that Apple can do no wrong and Microsoft can do no right. If anything, I've criticized Apple more often, just because I use their stuff more, so issues with it - and them - affect me more. I'm plenty pissed at them right now for screwing over paying ADC members by delaying access to the GM build of Leopard, as a matter of fact. But don't let me keep you from [STRIKE]tilting at windmills[/STRIKE] defending that plucky little upstart Microsoft from the big bad Cult of Mac.

edit: Whereas Microsoft was supporting Windows 95 years after it said it would stop and provided all the patches/fixes etc. for download years after that again. This behaviour on the part of Apple makes it the new Microsoft IMO.

Boot Camp is currently a beta. Microsoft did not support betas of Windows 95 after the final version of Windows 95 was released.

I've got several pieces of beta software that isn't time limited. I've got a beta version of Firefox 3 and uTorrent and neither is time limited.

Apple will discontinue and disable Bootcamp for Tiger to force users to upgrade to Leopard.

There seems to be an impression here that Boot Camp installations on Tiger 10.4 will stop functioning after today. This is NOT correct.

Users of Boot Camp who have already installed the software on Tiger 10.4 in a dual boot with Windows will NOT find their existing installations disabled.

It is only NEW attempts to install the old Boot Camp beta on Tiger 10.4 which will not work. The Boot Camp beta is no longer available.

A user's license to use Boot Camp beta will expire with the release of Leopard 10.5 at 18:30 pm on 26 October 2007. Apple has always maintained that the license for the Boot Camp beta would expire with the release of Leopard 10.5. Expiration of the right to use Boot Camp does not mean that the software will "phone home," realize that its license has expired, and then refuse to work (as does Vista, for example).

If you currently have Boot Camp installed on Tiger 10.4 and you are using it in a dual boot with Windows, have no fear. You need do nothing. Your OS X/Windows installations will continue working exactly as before. You may continue using such installations INDEFINITELY although not LEGALLY.

Apple does not want you to use their software illegally, so they demand upgrade to OS X 10.5 if you want to continue updating Boot Camp drivers and adding new Boot Camp features. But they do not build spyware into their software to monitor your compliance with the license, nor do they disable the functionality of their software if their spyware thinks you are not in compliance. Apple is not Microsoft.

I contributed to their development when I was on contract to Microsoft testing their software.

And I'm sure you were paid very well for your contribution.

I don't think I have to buy a product to contribute to its development anyway - millions of employees use Microsoft products and they don't pay for the software directly.

They use software that is PAID FOR by the companies they work for. That money contributes to development of future versions of the software.

Plus why should I need to pay for something to defend it?

Are you saying that my opinion is invalid and negated by the fact that I haven't paid for something - what will we do with Opensource and Freeware software then?

As someone who freely and openly steals software, you contribute nothing to the development of those products. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it - I'm no defender of the big guys - but when you accuse one company of being as bad as another company for their failure to provide things for free, forever, you highlight the hypocrisy of your stance. THEY provided a beta product for a limited time for FREE. Now they don't. You, on the other hand, steal software, encourage others to do so, and then complain when Apple don't hand their products out free of charge. If everybody did what you did, there would be no software.

Opensource is a whole different argument, where capable users pay for their software by contributing to its development. Less capable users are beneficiaries. I'd buy this argument if you used their software, but every app you quoted is a commercial app.

I am NOT the copyright police. All I'm saying is, who are YOU to question the ethics of a commercial entity, when you contribute nothing to them, and when you stand to lose NOTHING by their actions?

I still don't get what the big deal is.

They were supporting a free product while it was in beta.. now that it's no longer in beta they won't be supporting it. It's not going to stop working.. it's just not going to get any more updates.

I dont' see where the scandal is. It seems that this is just another chance for someone who goes out of his way to bash Apple to bash Apple. If you're happy with the products you use.. use them. I don't like the way Windows works and I prefer Apple. Since I can afford Apple products, I'll use them.

I'm not an elitist. I'd love to see Apple decouple the OS and sell it for commodity hardware. The more people who use it the better, as far as I'm concerned - I have zero interest in keeping the Mac an exclusive club. Not that I would automatically recommend it to everyone - just because it's the best solution for me doesn't mean it's the best solution for everyone or every situation.
