Aquatic Anxiety

Part 34

I wake up the next morning, but this time it wasn’t because of Spencer coming into the room. I made sure to close the door all the way the night before.

I reach over and check the time on my phone; it’s eight-thirty. I reluctantly roll out from under the sheets and stand up, stretching and yawning to try to fully wake myself up. I bend down and pull on my sweatpants, then pull on a shirt and walk out of the bedroom to see if Colt or Matty are up.

Once I get to the kitchen, I see Colt sitting at the bar. He’s already showered and dressed for the day. Wisps of steam rise into the air from his cup of coffee. He looks up at me from his tablet and smiles. “Morning, Joey.”

I stretch and yawn again, not yet fully awake. “Morning, Colt.”

“Sleep well for your second night here?”

I nod. “I did. I’m still a bit tired from the party last night, but I’m good otherwise, thanks. And you?”

He chuckles. “Yeah, our parties have a reputation for making you feel tired the next morning. I slept great myself, but I’m always an early riser, so it wasn’t too hard to get out of bed. Matty, on the other hand…”

“He’s more of a night owl?”

“Exactly. He’ll still be out for a little while longer, but it’s fine. I get to have a little time to myself and catch up on the news while he sleeps in.” He stands up. “Coffee?”

I bring my hands together as if to pray. “Please.” He walks over and grabs a mug from the collection that are hanging underneath the kitchen cabinets and pours me a healthy cup of coffee, handing it to me. I thank him as I take it, blow on it to cool it down a little, and take a sip. He sits back down at the bar, and I sit on the stool beside him. “That’s interesting.”

“What’s that?”

“I figured as much time as you two have been together, you’d be, I dunno, on the same schedule, and want to do everything together.”

He laughs. “Well, Matty and I aren’t carbon copies of one another. We each have our own interests, and with as much traveling around the country as I do for work, we have to find ways to entertain ourselves when we’re not near each other.”

“That makes sense. I guess in all my past relationships, my boyfriend and I always did stuff together.”

“Right, but you haven’t yet had a relationship last as long as mine with Matty.”

I nod. “True.”

He chuckles. “It’s healthy to have a little time and space to yourself when you’re in a relationship. I’ve watched some of my friends get so wrapped up in a romance that they almost forget who they are.”

I can almost relate exactly to what he’s saying. Ever since Steve and I started really hanging out, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about him—especially now that I’m away from him. It feels almost like my life has been revolving around him over the past several months, what with us working together and hanging out almost every weekend. It wasn’t until recently when we stopped hanging out so much, and now I feel this huge emptiness. At least being here with Colt and Matty has lessened that feeling.

He places a hand on my shoulder, “I know you’re young and have your whole life ahead of you, so try not to be like some of the friends I know and lose sight of who you are and what direction your life is going.”

I tilt my head. “You’re right. Maybe I’ve been focused too much on Steve lately—”

“—And taking a step back and giving yourself some space to think can be a good thing. If he really cares about you, he’ll understand.”

I hear footsteps behind me and turn my head to see Matty approaching from the hallway, clad in his pajamas. Colt stands up again. “Ah, finally decided to join the living, eh Matty?”

Matty grumbles. “Careful, or I’ll be taking your place among the living.”

Colt turns to me, smiles, and whispers. “He’s always so cheery in the morning.” His voice returns to a normal volume. “Breakfast, anyone?” He doesn’t wait for an answer and immediately goes to work whipping up a fabulous breakfast as Matty pours himself a cup of coffee. Once Colt’s done cooking, the three of us sit and chat while we eat, though I dare not ask how Matty slept. I’m pretty sure I already know the answer. Matty and I help clear the dishes once everyone’s finished eating.

I retreat to the guest bedroom and strip down, then step into the bathroom and hop in the shower. I crank up the hot water and just let it wash all over my body, but try to take care not to use all of it up. I lather up and rinse off, then dry off and walk back to the bedroom with the towel around my waist, leaving the door open by just a crack.

I unwrap my towel and set it on the bed while I gather my outfit for the day. I hear a rap at the door and spin around. “Come in.”

The door slowly opens, and Colt enters, getting a full view of my body. Unfazed, he holds up a pair of black long johns. “Got these for you.”

“Sweet! Let me try them on.” I bend down and stick one leg in, then the other, and pull them up to my waist. I reach inside and adjust my package, which is a bit difficult since I’m now sporting a semi, excited from the feeling of wearing some of Colt’s underwear.

He looks me up and down. “What do you think?”

“A bit tight, and not because of this.” I grip my package.

He chuckles. “They might feel a little constricting at first, but you’ll really appreciate them the moment you step outside.”

“I don’t doubt it.” I reach for my jeans and start putting them on. “Thanks, Colt.”

“Don’t mention it. I’ll leave you to it.” He steps out, closing the door behind him.

I finish getting dressed, then step back out to the kitchen where Colt is sitting at the bar and reading his news as before. I pick my cup of coffee up and finish it off. “I take it Matty’s still getting ready?”

He chuckles as he puts his tablet down. “Let’s be real—he’s still waking up.” I laugh, and he continues, “Yeah, he’s still showering, but he’ll be done soon. Excited about going into the city?”

I nod enthusiastically. “Hell yeah. I’ve never been anywhere as big as New York.”

“Well, there aren’t too many places in the world that are bigger! There will be plenty to do, and don’t worry if we don’t get everything done that you want to do; we can always take the train back in another day.”

Just then, Matty shows up, fully dressed and looking real dapper. “Ready to go, boys?”

Colt smiles. “You betcha. I’ll get the dog.”

I look at Colt, confused. “We’re taking Spencer with us?”

Colt laughs. “Oh, heavens no. We’re just going to drop him off at our friend’s place on the way to the train station. He’ll watch him while we’re gone.”

With that, the four of us step out, and I notice a big difference now that I’m wearing the long johns underneath my jeans. Luckily I remembered to pack a sweatshirt and jacket, but even though I’m wearing both, they almost aren’t enough to keep me warm.

We walk a few houses down and drop Spencer off at Colt and Matty’s friend’s house. I recognize him from the party last night. We stay and chat for just a couple minutes before continuing our way to the train station.

We get to the station and buy our tickets. As we wait for the next train, I camp myself under one of the heaters and rub my hands together to keep warm. Colt stands close by me, but Matty is about ten feet away in the cold, which I think is a bit odd, but I don’t question it. Soon enough, a train pulls up, and we board. Colt and Matty sit next to one another and I sit across from them. The train pulls off and gathers speed quickly. I turn my head and see the New York City skyline far in the distance. It looks like we still have a ways to go.

After the train pulls away from the next stop, a guy sits in the empty seat next to me. He opens his bag and pulls out the same kind of gaming console that Steve and I played together, and to my surprise, starts up the same Zelda game as well! I strike up a conversation with him, asking where he is in the game and what he’s done, and also telling him about my experience with the game. It’s nice chatting with him, but it reminds me of how much I miss those times with Steve. I try shaking it off and focusing on the fun time I’m having now.

As the train continues west, more and more people board, and soon it’s packed. Several stops later, the train enters a tunnel and begins slowing down, and we soon arrive at Penn Station. We all begin stepping and rolling off, and I say goodbye to the guy who sat next to me and wish him the best of luck with the game.

I follow close behind Colt and Matty, almost needing to hang on to their coats so I don’t get lost in the crowd of people. We make our way through the underground maze of hallways, train terminals to one side and lines and lines of shops on the other, until we finally reach an exit.

Out on the street there are still large crowds of people, but at least they’re not as densely packed. I’m surrounded by buildings taller than any I’ve ever seen before. Miami has some pretty tall skyscrapers, but nowhere near as tall and nowhere near as many compared to this. I can see the Empire State Building poking up very prominently over any of the surrounding buildings.

Once the crowd thins down a bit, Colt spins around to face me. “So, where to?”

I throw my hands up. “Why are you asking me? It’s my first time here!”

Colt grins. “Fair enough. Well, it’s our tradition to stop in somewhere for some pierogi anytime we come to the city.”

I tilt my head. “What’s a pierogi?”

“It’s a dumpling with a meat or cheese filling.”

I scratch my chin. “Hmm, never had one of those before, but they sound tasty.”

Matty smiles. “They’re delicious! How about it?”

I give them a thumbs-up. “Let’s do it!”

I follow them both as we walk another block and then down some stairs into another station, this time the subway. “Another train?”

Colt nods. “Yup, this is how we get around, unless you want to hoof it all over Manhattan.”

There’s a loud screech as a train pulls into the station. We quickly board the train, the doors close, and we’re moving. A few stations later, we get off and walk back up to street level, passing by a guy playing trumpet inside the station.

We walk a couple more blocks until we finally reach a restaurant and head inside. We wait a few minutes for an empty table, then are seated. I glance at the menu and am amazed at all the options for pierogi. There are a lot more choices than just meat or cheese. Eventually we decide on what we want and place our order. Sure enough, they’re as delicious as Matty said they’d be. Once we finish eating up, it’s off to the next destination.

Since I have no idea really where things are or what to do next, I’m at the whims of Colt and Matty as they show me around. We hop back on the subway and reemerge at street level, this time around a lot of really tall buildings—more than there were outside of Penn Station. One in particular looks very familiar as we walk toward it.

I get Colt and Matty’s attention as we walk. “Guys, is that the new World Trade Center building?”

Matty answers, “It sure is.”

Colt speaks up. “You must’ve been just a baby when that happened.”

I chuckle. “I don’t think seven years old qualifies as young enough to be a baby. Still though, I barely remember anything that happened that day. I just remember my parents keeping the TV off, and they watched everything but the news after that. Where were you guys?”

Colt answers, “I was living in Boston at the time, and Matty was still in Canada, but we had both visited here before then, so it hit pretty close to home for us. It almost doesn’t seem like seventeen years has passed.” We continue walking a few more blocks until we reach the Hudson River.

Colt waves his hands out in front of him like curtains opening on a stage. “And here she is.”

I walk up and stand against the metal railing. The ‘she’ that Colt is referring to is the Statue of Liberty, of course. She seems so tiny all the way from where I’m standing, but nevertheless, it’s so surreal seeing all these famous landmarks in person.

I turn around and look at Colt and Matty. “Can you guys take a picture of me?”

Matty pulls out his phone and counts down as I smile and he takes a few pictures, then puts his phone back in his pocket. We stand there for several minutes longer as I take in all the sights and sounds around me. Colt and Matty are as patient as ever as I take in the atmosphere. Once I feel like I’ve had enough, I turn to them. “What should we do next?”

Colt answers, “Well, I don’t want to leave Spencer with our friend for too much longer.” He raises a finger in the air. “I think we can fit one more thing in. This way to the subway.”

The three of us start walking to the nearest subway station, and I speak up. “What do you have in mind?”

Colt looks over as we walk. “Well, you can’t leave New York without seeing the Christmas Tree all lit up.”

And with that, we descend back into the subway.

Dammit, sorry for the triple post, but I forgot to post a video I found of someone walking through Penn Station in New York City. I've been to Grand Central before, but not Penn Station, which is where the L.I.R.R. terminates in NYC. For those wanting to see what it's like to walk around Penn Station, enjoy!

And a music video for inspiration!

Alicia Keys - New York

New York is a beautiful but expensive city to visit. I liked this chapter for Joey seeing he was fixated on Steve too much and having some alone time will help both he and Steve maybe bringing them closer together.

Hey, bud!

THANK YOU for telling us about Jake, and your trips to NYC. Love the pic of you two on the top of the Empire State Building. Though I have a "thing" about heights, that's definitely one of the "Must" things to do. The last time I was up there, you could still just walk in, wait a bit for the elevator, and go on up. Now, I understand you have to schedule it in advance.

By the way, New Orleans is one of my favorites cities, too! I've never been to Portland, though. It's still on my "bucket list". One of these days ...

This line from the story nails NYC pretty much: "I follow close behind Colt and Matty, almost needing to hang on to their coats so I don’t get lost in the crowd of people." Yep!

I like your description of Colt and Matty's relationship. Kev and I have been together for 37 yr, and we still have our own styles, and time tables, for doing things. Hint: I am NOT the morning person! HA!

I'm also digging Spencer. At one time our house might have qualified as a zoo. Our German Shepherd's playmates included fish, birds, an iguana, cats, small dogs, and even some kids at various times. It's been a while since we've had a pet, or roommates, living with us. They all, and each, make a huge difference.

Looking forward to more of Joey's story!

Thanks for the comment, Brian! Yes, things can get quite expensive in NYC, depending on what you want to do. Lots of things can be done for free, but of course if one is staying overnight, there's the cost of hotels to consider. It's almost worth going to see other cities instead, especially if there's a concert or show that's touring and going to be at that city. But there are just so many things you can't see anywhere else but NYC. Oh the dilemmas!

Sometimes being away from the object of your affection can help clear your mind and get you thinking straight. Luckily for Joey he has his time away from both Steve and his usual routine. Plus Colt and Matty, being older and having been together as long as they have, are sure to be great role models for Joey. Joey will eventually figure himself out, I'm sure. Part of the fun is watching how he does.

You're welcome, Chaz! Jake was a very close friend and part of my life for over ten years, and is irreplaceable. Some time has passed since his death, but I find myself thinking a lot about him from time to time.

When we went to the Empire State Building, I think we just got in line and paid for tickets and went up the elevator. I'm not sure about making reservations. Now for the 9/11 Memorial, we did have to make reservations, but that's because it hadn't quite been finished yet, and they were limiting the number of visitors. Now I believe it's completely open, except for the museum portion, but don't quote me on that!

Wow, you had quite the menagerie! (I hope I used that word correctly!) I don't know how I'd be able to keep up with that many animals, PLUS kids! But I imagine they each add such a great amount of joy to your life, as you said.

I'm glad to hear you're looking forward to more of Joey's story! There's definitely much more to come!

Part 35

The three of us get to our subway stop and exit the train, then I follow Colt and Matty as we walk up the stairs and back into the cold New York air. Soon my eyes fall upon the biggest Christmas tree I’ve ever seen. There are tons of people around—skating in the ice rink, waiting in line, or standing and sitting around the railing. Christmas tunes from singers ranging from Bing Crosby to Mariah Carey pump through the overhead speakers.

Colt turns to me. “Have you ever gone ice skating?”

I chuckle. “Nope. I’d probably fall flat on my face.”

He pats me on the shoulder. “Oh, why not give it a try?”

I shrug and cross my arms. “I don’t know, Colt…”

Matty nudges Colt with his elbow. “Come on, hon, don’t pressure the boy.”

Colt sighs and smiles. “All right, love.”

I’m just happy to stand here and watch everyone else have a great time. Scanning all the people skating around, there are many couples, and I even spot some gay ones. I’m sure if it got cold enough in Savannah for people to skate around on solid ice, I wouldn’t see any gay couples. Hell, even in Raleigh, there probably wouldn’t be many.

We stick around for a while longer, not really saying anything to one another, but just watching the other people here. Eventually Colt speaks up. “We better get going. Spencer’s probably starting to get angsty by now.” With that, the three of us walk the fifteen or so blocks back to Penn Station and wait for the next train to Long Island. The platform’s about as crowded as Rockefeller Plaza where we just were, but I welcome the much-needed warmth. The train arrives, and it’s an elaborate song and dance as people on the train disembark and filter their way through the crowd waiting to board, and then the roles reverse. Luckily the train’s not totally full, and everyone is able to grab their own seat.

It’s about a thirty-minute train ride back to our station on Long Island. Once we get there, the three of us step off the train and walk the few blocks to Colt and Matty’s neighborhood. We stop at their friend Nelson’s house to pick up Spencer and go inside for a quick moment. Spencer is very excited when we show up, and Colt and Matty talk to their friend for a few minutes before we leave and head back to their house.

I’m so tired when we step inside the house, and Colt and Matty can tell. Colt helps me hang up my jacket on the coat rack. “The city can be exhausting. Go ahead and take a power nap.” I thank him and head to my room, close the door just a crack, strip down, and crawl into bed.

* * * * *

It’s still daytime when I wake up, even though I feel like I’ve been asleep for hours. I check the time on my phone. I’d only been asleep for about an hour. I start checking a few things, then hear a rap at the door before it slowly creaks open. It’s Matty. He smiles at me. “Finally up, I see.”

I yawn and motion for him to come in. “I only feel half-awake, but sure.”

He steps inside. “Hope I’m not bothering you, just wanted to check and see if you might be hungry. Colt and I are going to start dinner soon.”

“Nope, not bothering me at all. I do feel kinda hungry. We only had those pierogis for lunch.”

He chuckles. “That’s true.” He turns around. “Well, take your time getting up. No rush from us.” With that, he steps out, closing the door behind him.

I yawn one final time and step out from under the covers, then get dressed and try to fix my hair and get it to look as presentable as I can. As soon as I exit the bedroom, Spencer runs up to me, and I bend down and pet him a few times from his head all the way to his tail. I walk to the back of the house and see Colt and Matty in the kitchen. Colt looks up from whatever he’s chopping. “Wow, when I said the city could be exhausting, I didn’t know it could be that exhausting!”

I shake my head. “Sorry, I must’ve really needed the shut-eye.”

He chuckles. “No need to apologize. If you feel up to it, we can always go back.”

I nod. “That might be fun. You guys have any plans tomorrow for Christmas?”

Colt answers, “Not until the evening. We’re having dinner over at Nelson’s, the same friend of ours who watched Spencer for us today. Poor guy—he doesn’t have much company around the holidays, so Matty and I usually spend some time with him this time of year.”

I sit at the bar next to Matty. “Aww, that’s sweet of you guys to be there for him. Why doesn’t he get much company?”

Colt looks over at Matty, who speaks up. “I’ve known Nelson for a while, back when he and I were graduate students. We even dated for a bit—this was before I moved here and met Colt. He’s always been kind of a lone soul. Well, things didn’t work out between us, and he ended up moving here and we lost touch.”

“How’d you reconnect?”

“Well, I was looking at schools to go to for my business doctorate, and one of the universities in New York was on my list of schools to apply to. It had been a few years after Nelson moved, but I figured, what the hell? While I’m down here checking out this school, maybe he’d want to grab lunch. And I took a chance and called him, and he said yes!”

“Sweet! That’s awesome that you two were able to reconnect.”

“It sure was. Out of all the universities I was considering, I liked the one here the best. Plus, no one I knew lived near any of the other ones. I ended up getting accepted at the university here, and by that time, Nelson had found himself a boyfriend.”

“Oh. Are they still together? I don’t remember him mentioning a boyfriend.”

“Well, the two of them worked out much better than when I was dating him. They were practically meant for each other. I was really surprised he found him, too. Remember, these were the days when we didn’t have ten or fifteen different fancy apps where you could find guys with just the swipe of a finger.”

I cross my arms. “Hey, even with apps, you’d still be hard pressed to find someone to date in a place like Savannah.”

Matty shrugs. “I suppose you’re right. Well, like you, Nelson didn’t have much family support, and his boyfriend, Wallace, had the same situation with this family. They ended up marrying each other the day it became legal in New York. I still remember that day vividly—we were all at the courthouse, and it was just them, me, and a justice of the peace. A small ceremony, but Nelson and Wallace were beaming. I’ve never seen him so happy. Unfortunately, Wallace was diagnosed with cancer a few years after that and passed away not too long after.”

I cover my mouth in shock and sadness. “That’s really awful. For Nelson to find someone he loved and just have him taken away so quickly.”

Matty crosses his arms and leans his head to one side. “It was so hard seeing him go through that. I can’t even begin to imagine how much loss he experienced. I was right by his side when Wallace passed. I guess if you’re lucky enough to see someone on their happiest day, you’re also likely to see them on their worst?”

“At least he had you there beside him on both occasions.”

“We seem cosmically linked that way, I guess.” He breathes a heavy sigh. “So, Colt and I make sure to visit him often, especially this time of year. He loves watching Spencer, too. Gives him something positive to focus on. Anyway, you are more than welcome to come along with us to his place for dinner tomorrow night, but Colt and I completely understand if you’d rather stay here.”

I shake my head. “No, I’d love to join you guys, and to get to know Nelson better, even though now I don’t know what to bring up since you told me everything.”

Colt chuckles. “I’m sure Matty and I will have plenty of things to talk about to keep the conversation going.”

I smile. “I hope so. What about after tomorrow?”

“Well, unlike Matty here who is still on his holiday break from teaching, I leave for my work trip.”

I nod. “Oh yeah, that’s right.”

He looks over at Matty. “And while you have all this free time, dear, I was thinking you could give Joey here some tips on his new business.”

I shrug. “I dunno. That’s still so far off. I have no idea if it’ll even get off the ground.”

Colt snaps back at me. “Well, it sure won’t with that kind of attitude. And that’s how Matty can help. The two of you will have plenty of time over the next few days to pick each other’s brain.”

I look back at Matty. “Would you?”

Matty flashes a huge smile. “I’d be delighted to, Joey. It’ll be a nice change from speaking in front of hundreds of students in lecture hall.”

Colt finishes cooking dinner, and the three of us dish up and eat. Even after my nap, I’m still tired from our gallivanting around the city earlier and decide to turn in.

* * * * *

I wake up the next morning from Spencer pushing his way into the bedroom and hopping up onto the bed. He runs up to lick my face, and I lightly scratch his back and sides. I roll out of bed and throw on some pajamas, then step out of the room.

I’m soon treated to the sound of a roaring fire and a strong scent of cinnamon. Colt and Matty are both sitting on the floor with their backs against the couch and a blanket strung across their laps, each holding a piping hot cup of coffee. Spencer follows me as I make my way toward them. They both look up, and Colt stands up while Matty moves over to the fire to stoke it.

Colt walks to the kitchen to pour me a cup of coffee. “Merry Christmas, Joey. I hope Spencer didn’t wake you again.”

I chuckle. “He did, but it’s fine. I think I got enough rest. Merry Christmas to you guys, as well.” I look over at the Christmas tree. “And a bunch of gifts showed up overnight, I see.”

Colt hands me my cup of coffee. “Well, of course! Santa does come around midnight, silly. You still believe in Santa, right?”

I give him a smirk. “Even if I did, I doubt he came for me.”

He gives me a smirk in return. “You might want to ask him for a pair of glasses next year. Take a closer look.”

As I make my way closer to the tree, it’s hard not to notice Matty as he’s bent down stoking the fire. Thanks to the thinness of his pajamas, his round package is very visible between his legs. I try not to focus on it and turn my attention instead to the gifts under the tree. In the big pile, I spot one with my name on it. “Oh my god, guys, you shouldn’t have.”

Colt just shrugs. “We didn’t do anything, except tell Santa where you were going to be this year for Christmas.”

I smile and shake my head. “Well, whether it’s from Santa or from you guys, I really appreciate the gesture.”

Colt and Matty sit next to each other once again, while Spencer curls up in front of the fire. I decide to join him, the raging heat of the fire feeling heavenly against my skin, especially after all the time in the cold yesterday.

Colt takes a sip of his coffee. “Well, don’t you want to open it?!”

I try to look excited, even though I’m still half-asleep. “Sure, I just didn’t know when we’d be opening gifts.”

Colt sets his coffee down and scrambles across the floor to the tree like an ecstatic child as Matty looks on, grinning and shaking his head. Colt finally gets to the tree. “I don’t know how you can stand to wait! When I was a kid we got up at six in the morning to open gifts.”

Matty laughs. “Yeah, and every year you talked your parents into letting you and your brothers and sisters open one gift early on Christmas Eve.”

Colt shoots a playful, but nasty look back at Matty. “Yeah, be glad I don’t do that anymore!” He picks up my gift and scampers back over to Matty, handing me the gift along the way. I pause and just observe the two of them and their interactions with each other. I guess this is how people act after being married for ten years. I can tell without a doubt they love each other very much, but there are still things about them both that the other person rolls their eyes at. I suppose that’s just natural after spending that amount of time with someone. It’s actually a little endearing.

I look down at my present as I hold it in my hands. It’s thin and rectangular, and soft to the touch, though firm at the corners. Shaking it doesn’t make any noise. As a kid I loved trying to guess what was beneath the wrapping paper before opening it. It’s been a while since I’ve had this experience. I come to the conclusion that it must be clothes, but I have no idea what kind of clothes they could be.

I slip a finger under the wrapping paper and pull, eventually revealing that my gift is a three pack of long johns. I look up at Colt, knowing full well he’s the one who got them for me. “Thank you, Colt. What made you think of long johns?”

He shrugs. “Well, just in case we decide to go back to the city before you leave, you’ll be able to stay warm. And even if we don’t, who knows? Maybe it’ll get cold enough to snow in Savannah and they’ll come in handy.”

I laugh. “We’ll see.”

Colt and Matty proceed to open their gifts. Colt is obviously way more excited about the process than Matty is, but Matty is wonderful at letting Colt have his moment of happiness, probably much like he was there during Nelson’s moment of happiness. They unwrap all manner of gifts, and it takes a while to get through them, but Spencer and I patiently watch on, enjoying the fire. Spencer even gets a couple of presents in the form of dog toys. As soon as they finish, Colt rises to his feet to start breakfast while Matty gathers all the ripped up wrapping paper.

The three of us eat breakfast, then I retreat back to the bedroom to shower and get dressed. Colt and Matty are both showered and dressed when I go back out. “Mind if I have a second cup of coffee?”

Colt shakes his head. “Not at all. Our home is your home.”

“Thanks.” I go to the kitchen and start pouring myself another cup. “So what time are we going to Nelson’s?”

Colt answers. “Not until around four, so you have plenty of time to do whatever. I, however, need to start packing for my work trip tomorrow.”

“Where are you going?”

“Baltimore. I’ll be taking the train down, and it leaves early in the morning, so the sooner I get all packed, the better.”

“Wouldn’t it be quicker to fly?”

“A little bit, but I don’t have the patience to deal with all the holiday crowds at the airports. The train takes longer, but it’ll be less stressful.”

“That’s understandable.”

“Yep. And while I’m packing, maybe you and Matty can get a head start on talking business.”

I glance over at Matty. “I suppose we could, if that’s all right with you.”

Matty claps his hands together. “Sure, let’s do it!”

And with that, Colt disappears around the corner and into his bedroom to pack as Matty leads me from the kitchen into his study.

Great Chapter!! Colt & Matty are thoughtful hosts for getting Joey Christmas gifts though they don't know him very long. With Mattys' help maybe Joey can figure out a way to make his business dream into a reality.

Thank You for all of the time & energy you put into writing your stories for us, your fans.

I check back here every day or two myself..........always seeking more boner fodder....... :p ....... *|* *|*

Hey guys! I know it's been a while since I've posted last. Those of you who've been following me for a while know, like many writers, I go in bouts of tons of writing, then not a lot for a while. Just wanted to let you all know I got a burst of inspiration for putting more energy into this story, and there should be some more parts coming out soon! I've actually written about four chapters ahead--I just need to do my usual editing and proofing and they'll be out! I want to apologize for taking such a long break in between chapters, but I know you guys will come back once I post more, and I really appreciate you all taking the time to come check back in!

Yeah, Colt and Matty are certainly the loving, nurturing couple. They're not quite parental figures, but they sort of fulfill that purpose for Joey, if only for a little bit of time. I also like the dynamic between the two, since there's a few years in age between them, and they're almost polar opposites (Colt's a morning person, loves the warm weather, while Matty's a night owl and doesn't mind the cold). Colt certainly had Joey's distaste of winter in mind when getting his gift. And in a way, Matty's gift is his help with Joey's business. With enough help, you're right, dreams can become reality!

Awesome!

Here's to a Happy Nude Year, buddy!! (!w!) (*8*)
