And I’m sorry for all of you that are going to have to suffer through that winter storm.

Frankie, thanks for the advice on the computers. My laptop is acting weird. I left it plugged in but didn’t use it for several days, and voila, it was fully charged and acted normally. But yesterday I took it with me to my genealogical society volunteering, but I can’t plug it in the wall where we’re meeting now. So the battery got depleted, and it’s not recharging once I plugged it in at home. So I’m accessing JUB from my phone again, hoping my laptop will charge up again.

Speaking of the genealogical society, I went to their winter program today, where they had a guest speaker give a couple of lectures on the censuses. It was held in a small, nice auditorium owned by the local solid waste authority, believe it or not. I got a few ideas from that.

Dan, be prepared for some cold weather. We’re going to have a couple more warm days, and then it’s going to be cold for several days. No snow and ice, but the Weather Service is putting out bulletins saying temperatures will be much below normal through at least the first week of February.

Finally I got my auto insurance changed over yesterday, which will save me over $600 a year. And that’s even after they found gaps in my old coverage. So I’m happy about that.
 
Hi Johnnie I guess your laptop may have a solution , maybe because of letting it plugged for several days , the battery got screwed up . Perhaps at some special Apple repair place , they can solve your laptops issue

Damn John, it's gonna be exceptionally cold here. In the 10 day forecast, 6 days down in the 30's, and 2 days down in the 20's! :bartshock It hasn't been this cold for 4-5 years. I'm sure you'll be feeling too.

Dan, I’ve seen the long range forecast, and it looks like it will be extremely cold 🥶 even in South Florida in a few days.

We’re seeing some yo-yo temperatures. Thad, if you had managed to make it down here, it was 90 degrees in West Palm Beach yesterday. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen it that warm in January. But a cold front came through last night, and it’s already down to 47 degrees, and windy.

And the weather service has put out a bulletin saying that we could have temps South Florida hasn’t seen since January 2010. I’ve seen the long range forecast, and they’re saying lows in the 30s Sunday and Monday, and highs only in the mid 50s on Sunday afternoon.

Correction. The news said it will be coldest temps in 16 years.
 
Hey John. I've only been thinking of me being cold. 5 miles south of me, Apopka is known a the "Indoor Foliage Capital of the World. * There are literally 1000's of nurseries in the area. They ship tropical plants all over the US and Canada. There may be a lot of losses when the temp hits 24/25. :( Not to mention the citrus groves still up here. They have to find some way to save them or they all die. Many have sprinklers that keep the temp at 32. Back in the day they used smudge pots.

I heard there may be "Gulf Effect Snow" coming in from the west coast. I can honestly say I've never heardthat term. :oops:

Yeah Dan, they're forecasting temperatures for February 1 and 2 that Florida hasn't seen in many years. They've issued a freeze watch for all of Palm Beach County for Sunday morning, which I haven't seen in a long time. They're saying it will be 32 degrees here. I remember in the past, in the years before climate change made these cold outbreaks extremely rare, that a short duration of 32 degrees of a half-hour to an hour or two usually didn't do much damage to the tropicals, so I'm not too worried about most of my plants. I might have some drop of the young fruit beginning to form on my mango tree, and some damage to my papaya, but it shouldn't be a big deal overall.

Dan, I know that temps in the mid 20s in your area will probably kill or severely damage the tropical plants in your area. I'd think the citrus would be able to recover from a freeze like that, but if they're already infected with citrus greening, they may be too weak to come back from that.

I never heard the term "Gulf Effect Snow" either, it sounds like something the weather people made up. I remember there were reports of snow flurries in the Tampa Bay Area with the advent of a couple of the most extreme cold weather events way back in the 1980s, though I never saw snow in the 17 years I lived in Tampa.

Gary, it sounds like your weather is right about average for the desert at this time of year. I hope everything is going well with you.

Well, I'm back on my laptop, which finally came back fully charged after having it plugged in and unused for several days. I'm thinking it's a sign that the batteries are about to go. Which I've had this happen several times before, and I don't think it's worth it to get it repaired again. What's weird is that it seems to work normally once it's fully charged and I have it plugged in. But if I deplete the batteries as I have to do at my genealogical society volunteering, where I don't have access to an electrical outlet, it won't charge and further depletes the batteries even when plugged in. So I've had to switch to my iPhone. I've figured out how to do a lot of things such as access my JUB account, but it's a bitch to use, and I can't figure out how to do certain things on the phone, and it's difficult to navigate, which has caused me to make some errors on my postings. I'll try to keep things the way they are, and try to use the phone for my genealogical activity. And I'm certainly not ready to buy a new computer.
 
In Memorium: My Split Leaf Philadendron which was 7 ft tall, 15 ft wide, is now a pile of mush on the ground. :oops: I guess 24 degrees was too much.

Dan, I hope you're surviving our freezes OK. The plant you're describing sounds like Philodendron selloum. It sounds like your plant got beat up by the cold pretty bad, but I think it will eventually grow back. You might have to wait until the summer, but it will recover and look beautiful again.

The iguanas, not so much. I'm afraid that it got cold enough to kill a lot of them, so you might not see too many for awhile.

And yes, it has been cold!!! 🥶 West Palm Beach shattered their daily record lows on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2, going down to 30 degrees both days.These have been our first freezing temperatures since it dropped to 32 in 2010, and the coldest it has been since the temps went down to 28 on December 24 and 25, during the Christmas 1989 freeze. I did some checking, and most stations up and down the state of Florida broke records the past two mornings.

As bad as that sounds, it looks like my fruit trees and tropicals had little damage. The only thing that seems to show a lot of freeze damage is my Cuban oregano, which has considerable leaf burn. But it should come back from the stems since it is a vigorous plant. The things I'm more concerned about are my papaya, and my mango, which is just setting fruit for the next season. It looks fine, but it may take several days before any damaged fruit could drop. My papaya and coffee plant may have some leaf burn which won't show up until it gets warmer. And my frangipani/plumeria is dormant, so I'll have to wait to see if it leafs out normally in a month or two.

I hope you’ve recovered from our recent freeze.

It warmed up nicely yesterday afternoon, and I took a stroll around the neighborhood. Considering how cold it got, you could hardly see any freeze damage unless you were looking for it, but I did see two dead iguanas. They can’t take temperatures that cold.

My birthday was last week, and I treated myself by buying a rose bush at Costco. It was First Prize, a nice rose that I remember as a kid, from the Jackson & Perkins catalog. It was only after I got home that I realized that the box had two rose bush plants.

Well, I’m typing on the small screen of my cell again, since the battery power on my laptop is down again, and I want to preserve what charge I do have on it. I’ll probably spend less time on here, since it’s really not comfortable using it, and navigating can be a pain in the ass at times.
