Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Good Wednesday morning Thad, Dan, Loner, and Frankie! (*8*):therethere:

Thad, I don’t know if I’m having a better than I imagined week, it’s just been rather quiet so far.

Dan, I really didn’t announce my birthday this year, it was back on the 4th. I always relied on Billy posting a thread announcing it, God rest his soul.

Well, I learned not to shop at Costco on Sunday afternoons. I went to the one down the street after the MCC service to gas up. After waiting in long car lines, I decided to go in the store to buy one of those dishwasher detergent packs, 115 packs for $12.99 or whatever it was. It’ll last me for the rest of the year. But I drove all over that parking lot unable to find a space. I mean, two or three cars were sitting in every aisle, waiting for a space to open up. So I finally drove around the side and back of the building, finally having to violate a one-way sign to get to the back of the store, where I finally found some parking spaces. It was unusually hot for this time of year, as I had to walk all the way around the building to enter the store.

Speaking of weather, there’s been some crazy temperature swings this week. It was 90 degrees on Sunday, a bit early for it. But it was in the 40s by Monday morning, and it has been cold ever since, reaching 41 yesterday morning. Makes me wonder if I moved to Texas, they’re notorious for those wild temperature swings.

I have to do my laundry in a couple of hours. Yesterday was my laundry day, but I went to bed and huddled under the blankets on the cold morning, only to realize later that I had gone to sleep and forgotten about my clothes washing.

Hello Johnnie thanks for writing I hope that you have a pleasant March buddy
Thanks for writing

I did three loads of wash yesterday. It's so nice having clean socks and underwear. Although I bought new socks last week...

Good Thursday morning, Thad and Frankie! (*8*):therethere:

So far this has been a rather unremarkable week. Weather wise, it has been beautiful, with our usual warm temperatures returning.

I’m a bit disappointed because the roses I bought at Costco turned out to be mislabeled. I bought First Prize because I remember it as a kid. It was pink, and I specifically bought it because it had a good fragrance, to counterbalance that rose my friend gave me which doesn’t have much fragrance.

Well, one of the roses bloomed quickly, less than a month after planting, and it doesn’t even remotely resemble First Prize. It is a deep rose red color, with a hint of coral tint, actually rather agreeable, except that’s not the color it’s supposed to be. Instead of the elegant unfolding of the First Prize rose, this one immediately flopped open to reveal the bare center. And most disappointing of all, it has NO fragrance whatsoever.

I thought about digging up the roses and returning them to Costco. Or I’ll probably leave them in the ground and see if they “grow” on me.

I guess the lesson here is to only buy roses already in bloom at garden centers so I know what I’m getting.

It's not awful, but it sure isn't what you expected!

I went to New York Thursday for a Queer Comedy Festival. It was fun! There were over 14 comedians from across the LGBTQ+ doing 5-minute sets. I liked almost all of them. Nobody you've heard of, but that's the fun. Gray West hosted.
It rained afterwards. Fortunately I was staying overnight, but it was a very wet walk from 53rd Street to 40th Street. It was nice, though, to take off all the wet clothes and take a hot shower.

Good evening, John. I hope you had a good weekend. (*8*)
I wish I could grow beautiful roses like yours. But I have a white lily ready to blossom. And I'm thinking of getting some cacti.

Good Tuesday morning, Thad and Paul! (*8*):therethere:

Thad, I’m sure you had a good time listening to those LGBTQ+ comedians. They have a perspective on life, picking up nuances we can appreciate that aren’t on the radar of straight comedians.

I’m finding that roses can be quite fulfilling. I had been ignoring them for years, concentrating all my efforts on growing fruit trees. But roses require much less space, and there’s a lot quicker turnaround. I just have to remember to give them plenty of water and rose fertilizer with my dry and nutrient poor sandy soil.

On Saturday I drove down to Fairchild Tropical Gardens on Saturday. It’s a beautiful place. But I had to drive through Miami traffic, which I hate. It’s not just that it’s congested, driving down there makes me jittery. Thad, you will appreciate that I used to travel down there on TriRail, transfer to Metrorail, and then transfer again to a local bus that would take me to the Garden back in the 90s. I think I’m going to do that if I go down there again.

Good Saturday morning, Loner! (*8*):therethere:

Earlier this week I decided to splurge a bit on my garden, so I went down to Home Depot. I was disappointed with the roses I previously bought, so I wanted to get one with a strong fragrance. They had a yellow rose with a delightful fragrance labeled Sunsprite, which resembled one called Spanish Sun, that performed very well for me as a kid. I also bought a Persian shield plant with deep purple leaves.

The only problem is that I need to figure out where I want to plant them. The only place that I have a good space is on the south side of my house, but I’m wary of planting anything but known heat lovers there because of the intense sun and heat there.

I also have some Gaillardia or blanket flowers that have volunteered in my yard, and some of them are pretty colorful right now.
