Architecturally Wondrous Staircases

That's really freaky. I saw that staircase in a very disturbing dream once. I'd probably seen this picture already, but seeing it again brings back some unnerving memories.

This is known as a "samba staircase".
They're halfway between a ladder and a normal stair.

This is stupid and looks very dangerous.
A staircase with either polished wood (or stone) where you put your feet is slippery, combining an open stairway without a handrail on any side is against the building code in most countries.

This is simply inane.
There's no architectectural or aesthetic reason whatsoever for this staircase to be hovering like that. Moreover, the effect isn't even dramatic, because it's only less than a step high.

The last spiral stairs pictured in the first group is in Santa Fe, NM at the Loretto Chapel. It was built in the 19th century by an unknown old carpenter using only a hammer, a saw and a T square. It took him eight months to complete the beautiful and sturdy spiral staircase using NO NAILS and NO CENTER SUPPORT. Modern engineers are still baffled by it. The nuns say it was a "miracle".

The things that make a house feel like a home to me are my books. I'd buy a house based around this staircase. Wouldn't matter much what the rest of the place looked like long as my books were that comfy and snug.
