Is taking a cold shower healthy? or is that an old wives tale?

As usual, Adidas is correct.

The question is, why do you need to take cold showers?

My health teacher in high school recommended ending your shower with cold water, said it closed the pores of the skin, and this was supposed to be good for you. Don't remember why, and doubt that it has any scientific basis. I don't do it, I love warm showers.

cant see any scientific reason to advise one or the other. In hot weaher I always ramp up the cold towards the end otherwise i just dont feel refreshed when I get out of the shower and all the steam and heat in the bathroom means I end up sticky and sweaty again by the time I'm finished drying myself.

It feels good. After a soak in a hot spring it's invigorating to roll yourself in fresh snow. Then you run back into the hot water.

A hot shower opens the pores of your skin so you can get the dirt out. I too was told by my health teacher to end the shower cold to close the skin pores. I like a hot shower even in hot weather!

Cold showers cannot be too bad. More than two-thirds the world's people do not have access to hot water and they all manage to survive with cold water, many of them quite well. In Thailand, where most people have running water in their bathrooms, there are very few people who have hot showers, even in the north where the winters can be quite cold. We all grew up healthy.

Lukewarm to warm is the best for a shower.

Too hot, and you dry your skin out, especially if you live in an arid, cold climate (like here).

I read that a cold shower is a shock to your skin and that a lukewarm one is best because it mimics your natural body temperature. That being said, I haven't heard of any people having health complications after a cold shower either.

In some places, in the wintertime, people like to sit naked and sweat in the banya (in like 50 deg. C heat), and then run outside through the snow and jump into a frozen lake, and then switch back and forth between the two. This is supposed to be "fun" and a way to bond with your friends. I heard of an older guy who got a heart attack and died that way. I don't know whether this is an urban legend, but if you're going to those kinds of extremes, it might not be healthy.
