There have been somewhat convincing claims/observations made/reported in regards to intelligent people not reproducing any where near as fast as unintelligent people, and that this has been happening, increasingly, for decades.

I don't agree that the stupid people are the core of the problem. That the public schools have been abandoned by increasing degree by the middle class is a big problem, but that would mean that poor people in the past with low educations were somehow to blame for most of society's ills, and that simply isn't true.

There were and are plenty of people in the low education category who are fine citizens, including many poor immigrants.

And, equally important, there is nothing inherently virtuous about intelligent people. Many, many of them are cruel, selfish, cowardly and otherwise ignoble. Corrupt powers and corporations employ many intelligent people.

I do concur that social media and broadcast media have created a culture of zero-sum identities. It's not enough to find common ground. The forces of polarization are hell-bent on finding the one flaw that means someone shouldn't be respected, is not a true believer/liberal/Democrat/conservative/queer/patriot, or whatever.

Litmus tests are killing us.

Wisdom is in short supply and isn't venerated. Short-sighted goals are all that seem to make heads turn.

There are too many lies from all sides. Trump is the Lyin' King, but he has no copyright on it, nor do the conservatives.

"Stupid" things are happening as a result of selfishness. Good citizenship is being conflated with merely helping the poor. They are not synonyms. The people must believe in a commonwealth, but people prefer their own.

There's a huge difference between being uneducated and inherently stupid.

The bottom line is that people have abandoned courtesy and empathy in favor of some kind of ideological self-promotion. They align their entire character with their convictions and beliefs. Walking around in a constant state of defensiveness is a miserable way to live and makes it easy to forget that, yes, we are all allowed our opinions and beliefs but the other guy matters too.

"Live and let live" would be a good credo to live by but it's been reduced to a meaningless Hallmark platitude.
