Is this something you have noticed too?

Do people choose to vent their anger/frustration/inadequacy's online rather than face up the them in reality?

Yes

It eliminates the face...

Much like how some people act different when they have dark sunglasses on.

I think people choose to do this on line as it is easier and safer.

Let's be honest sometimes people in our real life get tired of hearing it.

On line we have access to loads of people who can give advice and suggestions we can use to adjust our own thoughts

Hopefully we then use these suggestions in our real life

It's easier for me to argue through IM or Email or something because I usually have a more clear mind and I get my point across better in text than if I try to verbally explain it. I get so angry not at them but at myself because

1. I'm mad I can't argue in complete thoughts or sentences
2. I'm mad the person is arguing with me
3. I'm mad at myself for not being able to think when I'm angry.

So it's easier to fight online...I dont like fighting though. =/ It's just easier being nice...

The internet fuckwad theory...

:-)

I didn't mean this site in particular but the internet in general.

I've come across far more arseholes (and not in a good way) online than I would have done in "real" life.

I would say they are actually more cowardly online. Most people are too cowardly to say the same things in person that they say online.

I'd actually agree with this 100%

People tend to say EXACTLY what they feel online, rather than holding back in real life.

i think some people tend to be more hostile on line as it is their release valve.

there are a few here but they are not anywhere near as hostile as the forum members are at startrek.com. there is nothing scarier than a forum full of geeks spouting off their vitriol over whether enterprise was canon or not. i gave up on them years ago.

"Give a man a mask and he'll tell you the truth." -Oscar Wilde.

I'm as brusque in person as online. I just try to be honest at all times. I think people are assholes by nature, but strive to hide that fact in person. It's probably a cornerstone of civilization.

I'm generally a lot nicer on this forum than I am in reality. I'm not competing against you all for anything and it's pointless to get riled up over an anonymous persons' statements.

I would think that a lot of people try to be more polite on a forum...we can't read each others body language, come from different backgrounds, etc. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I can't be entirely sure, but frankly... well, I've heard a lot of things said on here that would have got the speaker punched. I think it's out of a fear of retribution in real life; in 99% of cases, nobody can really damage you over the Internet as revenge for a misguided comment.

I'm this way in real life. Entirely liberal, not particularly aggressive, and I try to think through both perspectives before acting.

I also try not to get hostile, which is really the point of this thread. In real life, I think I've yelled twice in the past year. And one of those times... well, it was November '06, because I can remember what about, so actually it's debatable whether it happened within the past twelve months. :-/

On here, I'll swear a bit, but to be honest I react in scale with the hostility of the comment I'm replying to, and since people are generally a little more hostile on here...

I am the same offline as on line.

I'm surprised someone hasn't told you to piss off, though.
