I am gonna preemptively say that I (and probably others of you) can take or leave certain republicans and certain republican ideals.
With that being said, I am a conservative Christian (Baptist) republican 'southern gentleman' type person...I just happen to be bi.
That would be one reason why I lean Republican. I've never had Republicans say they hate gays. Homophobia by definition is the irrational fear of homosexuals. It doesn't mean "someone who disagrees with the homosexual lifestyle." Furthermore, there are gay Republicans working hard to change things in the party. And really, what have the Democrats done for gays? Clinton was supposed to change things. He didn't. Democrats have had a majority in Congress for 2 years now but have brought no pro-gay agendas to the floor. I'm convinced that Democrats simply placate to gays, just as they do minorities, but deliver just enough to keep your votes.
I lean right because I think it's best for the country. I'm not a socialist which in itself negates my ability to vote Democrat. Ultimately, the more personal and fiscal freedom I have the more free I'll truly be.
I appreciate you not wanting to turn this into an argument. I don't either. The country is painfully divided as it is. But please refrain from comments like "Why do you support a party who hates us?" because that sounds inciteful, even if unintended. I contend that Democrats are just as anti-gay in many ways. The far right (notice I didn't say Republicans) may disagree with homosexuality on religious grounds. I can understand that. However, not pushing a pro-gay agenda that you've promised an entire segment of your constituency, a constituency that I'll agree fights vehemently for the Democrat cause, that may just be more homophobic.
