That's all right John, there are very few here on these hallowed boards who know as much about Godzilla and Science Fiction as I do. After all, I am a geek. :xmas:

*Secretly, I think this is why Robert gives me such a hard time about Godzilla. Deep down he wishes he knew as much as I do.
 
In college there was a science fiction bunch who used to doubt that Godzilla or Dr. Who or such counted. We tended to consider those "science fantasy" (though I understand the new Dr. Who is supposed to be better).

I'm not even going to dignify that with a response. Suffice it to say, your "science fiction" bunch probably thinks proper science fiction is something like Fantasy Island. [-X

No, it was a bunch of science majors who suspected anything not written by someone with a doctorate in science, while accepting anything based on reasonable science.
They didn't consider "Star Trek" to be science fiction except by a stretch; it's fine to postulate one technology that has no connection to known theory, but the Enterprise was loaded with them....

Godzilla comes under the "fantasy" category because there's no way a reptile that big could exist; the physics is all wrong.
 
They had no trouble with suspension of belief -- they just thought it was in the wrong category -- if you're in science fiction, you shouldn't be violating known science, just reaching into the unknown.

I'm sorry, but no. Godzilla does not fall under "fantasy."

Science fiction (often called sci-fi or SF) is a popular genre of fiction in which the narrative world differs from our own present or historical reality in at least one significant way. This difference may be technological, physical, historical, sociological, philosophical, metaphysical, etc, but not magical (see Fantasy). -Wikipedia

Godzilla, as it was released in 1954, was an allegorical criticism of the use of nuclear weapons. The creature was born in a nuclear explosion and became the walking epitome of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As such the movie took on an anti-nuclear message. Granted, that has become less and less prevalent as the film series continued. But the origins of the character are rooted firmly in science fiction. Your group has a very narrow vision of what science fiction really is. Fantasy is LOTR and Harry Potter.

Pianist, what was weird was to hear some of them be so hard-core as to what was sci-fi and what was scfi-fi-fantasy... but then they'd get down with the chips and beer with everyone else for a home showing of "Empire of the Ants".

BTW, watching sci-fi-fan with these guys was always a trip; you'd get a running commentary from multiple science disciplines on what laws were being violated... of course, they did the same with Saturday morning cartoons...
Though I thought the real fun was when they'd try to think up a natural law that would actually allow for some things, like a cartoon character running on air until he looks down, then FOOM!
 
I wish I could remember the novel, or even the author....
These people encountered giant insects on some world out among the stars, and IMMEDIATELY one geeky character started reciting all the standard reasons they couldn't exist. Of course everyone else figured he was right; they just wished he'd shut up. The ship's engineer said he could design a giant insect that would work, but everyone just laughed --
Until they got down on the planet, caught some, and dissected them. The only conclusion they could reach from what they found was that the insects had been designed.....

I loved it.

But about cliques ,I agree with the other people , I've only been on JUB a couple of months and i have noticed that some people tend to post in "groups" .

I don't think they are intentionally trying to exclude anyone, I think they share similiar interests and may have known eachother a bit longer.
