  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Are you a digital data/information hoarder?

For the most part yes, until my computer crashes and I lose everything. I also have an external hard drive where I keep some shit.

I wish I was industrious enough to do that ..|

I've got loads of +1gb movies that only have like a single good scene in them, but the scenes are good enough that I feel like I have to keep the whole thing.

This is true haha. Same for me when it comes to tv shows and anime. Usually my friends just delete them after they watch, but if there's a scene I like in that episode. I am inclined to keep the whole thing.

I also hoard the porn vid's because inevitably somewhere down the road some various porn star will make it "big" and end up on "REAL WORLD", or become a serial killer/murderer... or what have you, and then become REALLY 'famous'. I don't want to be one of those guys that goes, "OMG... I USED to have his porn from years ago. :( ... WISH I'd have saved that! "

i had to download all the seasons of Cold Case only because the fucktards who are running hollywood were fighting over music rights. i don't know if that's been resolved.

and if anyone knows the show the music is the integral part of it.

that's the only thing I keep.

well, with somethings, yeah, which is why i need one of those hard drive storage thingys to backup my files. will get one soon though.

Pics and music will NEVER be deleted other than for some specific reason. (Replacing an old or glitchy mp3, a picture becomes corrupted, whatever.)

Texts I pretty much delete when my phone forces me to.

Depends on the item.

Texts don't exactly take up a ton of room, so I just let them accumulate.

E-mails and PMs I tend to delete pretty quickly unless there's a reason to keep them. I have a "save" folder that I put those in. That's mainly just for cleanliness - I don't like a ton of stuff cluttering up my e-mail/PM boxes.

Cell phone photos get sorted every month or so. Anything that has any reason to stay can stay, everything else gets tossed. I've had this phone for two years, and I have about 200 "saved" photos. (And about 200 that need to be cleaned off.)

Photos with my camera might get deleted as I take them if they're not good. Otherwise, they all get dumped into a folder called "raw" with subfolders for each day I make the dump. Then, when I futz with photos to make them look better, I always have the original to draw from.

Music stays forever.

Most of it is disposable but I have backup for system and documents. Porn is surely disposable. Import emails are copied over to doc file the rest gets deleted along with spam of course. Pictures are in the backup too.

Cell phone stuff gets deleted every day as needed. I don't have a text plan so I have a minimum of those. Voice mail gets filled easily so no hoarding is really possible plus I don't want to spend minutes wading through maintenance of unneeded messages to get to the new important messages.

One of my friends deletes his texts immediately after reading them, which just seems unfathomable to me. I have chat logs on my computer going back three or four years, and MP3s in my collection that have been shuffled from computer to computer for over 8, and I barely ever listen to them; whenever I get a new computer, I just copy the entire internal drive over to the new computer. I only ever delete anything when my drives start to get full, which doesn't happen too often (thank God for the speed at which storage technology increases )

Is this weird, or does anyone else hoard this stuff as well?

Three to four years? Pfft, amateur; I have chat logs going back at least 8 years. All the stuff from older than that was on a previous computer that I thought I had copied over onto my current one. When I found out that something went wrong and the data was lost, I was crushed.

I only delete text messages when my inbox gets full. The only emails I ever delete are spam. So, yes, I am a hoarder.

I've gotten a lot better with tv shows too... I used to save everything I ever downloaded. now, I watch and delete instantly unless I'm saving it for a friend.
I have two large FILE CABINETS full of VHS videotapes (plus enough loose ones around to probably fill up a third) that I either dubbed off TV, or purchased. Have I ever actually pulled any of them out and actually watched them? Hardly.

More amazing, though, is that I have NO music at all stored in my computer, and only ONE video (of the Tennessee Lieutenant Governor picking and eating a booger from his nose, while in official proceedings in Nashville).

I never saw any reason to start storing stuff, then feeling that I had to start managing this whole new set of files, much of which would only be redundant anyway.

I keep all the text messages.
If that is a digital hoarder, i like it because there are no mess :)

Rather than shuffle them from one computer to another, if the hard disk is ok, consider getting an external hard disk enclosure and use it as an external drive. This allows the new computer not to be clogged up with a copy of the old stuff when you've already got it on the other harddrive...

I also hoard :( With my old phone, I'd only be able to keep a limited amount of texts. Then I got my droid. It would be hard to figure out which texts to delete, and which I want to keep. (some really just make me crack a smile)

I moved about 50 gigs of videos to an external hard drive yesterday to make more room on my computer hard drive. I was down from 500gb to about 60, My external is 1.5TB and i'm gonna have to dump stuff from that in a few months when it gets full. By the way never buy a Seagate. They fail and there is not way to reboot it without paying Seagate to do it

I just managed to clear out 30 GB of junks from my PC hard disk drive and now my classmate assigned me a event freelance video with a total of 13 GB size of files. #-o I feel like my PC is going to be clogged and laggy for a long time If I don't get a new hard disk drive soon. I should get the 3GB ones this time.
