I have worked pretty much continuously since my father died when I was 16. Full time gigs since my first B.S. degree. Now I have 2 bachelor's degrees and a Master's, and a certification in my field and a professional state-issued license, which I don't use, but maintain as a backup. In short, I want to be employable and am paranoid about losing my job. When I think of people that are high school drop outs or those that worked years on an assembly line that has gone away, it makes me sad.

Haven't ever really had a "real job," where I depended on another to employ me. I have been self-employed my whole life and I know it's not for everyone, but it's the only real thing you can count on. In college I tutored for the University and privately. I held test reviews when I needed rent money. I had an ebay store as well. Since then I have been a Realtor and now a broker with my own company. These past years have not been easy, but I won't trade them for anything. You will never be paid what you are worth if you are trading time for money. There aren't enough hours in the day and there is not such thing as a steady paycheck.

I got fired in January and haven't had any inclination to look for another job.

I'm a full-time student with a very part-time job and seasonal work.

I have three part time jobs (this is how I've always prefered to work) in social care and support. I also do a great deal of self employed work proof reading and editing in a variety of roles.

I have been self employed since 1997. Business has dropped year after year since the beginning of the recession. Currently looking for ways to boost income...iow...grow/expand business...trying to figure out the best direction to go...with the way things are looking, the middle class should be less of a focus in the future.

I graduated in May, and since there are no teaching jobs in the States, I'm moving to Thailand to teach on Friday. Left my last job last week, underemployed as a pizza delivery boy ;)

I am a full-time student, so no job. If I had a job, I don't know how I would be able to balance school. Hectic as it is already!

Full-time employed, with *MY OWN JOB* and doing nothing else in more than 33 years. Solid Gold, I'm sorry to see your story (and there are probably more within this thread, which I sheepishly admit I haven't read thoroughly). That story is hella more common than any of us wish.

I have just joined the ranks of the unemployed. Was at the unemployment office this morning. Cant describe the fun I had...

gonna be a long winter

with the economy being bad for such a long time...I have found that it is more than just an employment issue. Peoples lives seem to be under more stress and it is resulting in abrupt changes. 2 couples that I know of that have been married for over 20 years have recently gotten a divorce. I'm really bummed right now because a couple of my favorite neighbors are putting their homes up for sale. It just wont be the same without them.

:(

I bought my home with my best friend over 9 years ago. He past away after the first 3 years. I have been able to keep things going but it has not been easy. I love where I live. I don't know where else I would live. I really need to boost my income back up but I have limits on how much I can get done. I kind of feel like I'm in limbo at the moment. I have an idea for a new small business idea but it still would take a pretty big chunk of my savings so I don't know right now if it would be better to wait until I see the economy improve more or just go ahead and do it. Not having a huge amount of savings makes it more risky. Well...just blabbering...sorry about that. Just stressed today...my neighbor just told me a few minutes ago that one of my most fav neighbors is moving. Damn...I miss my best friend.

Unemployed.

I got laid off last year and after lay off I was doing contract work for a former Employer for 10 months and now that has dried up. It's been a little over a month now. Sucks!!

(*8*) good friends are hard to come by.

I agree that the problems go further than just work/no work. There's reduction in wages, hours, benefits, etc..

However, I rather hope something good comes from this depression we've been in. I hope more people learn to live within their means. I hope more people stop putting everything on a credit card just to have the latest and greatest. I hope people will save more.
