My ancestors ran a woolen mill in Leeds. When I visited there 20 years ago, I couldn't stop marvelling at the sooted stone of a small church near the campus of the university. I knew immediately the entire city used to look like that before the burning of coal stopped.

The industrial era must have been a horror.

everything is in context. Our view of life is different to an ant . all they need is food and somewhere to live. The 1900s gave us that and more ... but it all in context to the ant

The context I'm thinking of is the emigration from the UK in the 19th century of the working classes, and others, to Australia, North America, and other places with more land, more clean air, more opportunity than industrialized Europe.

My ancestor had privilege, yet even privilege couldn't make living in that society not odious.

So to where would the same conditions now push you to emigrate, and so keep the tradition moving?

I've actually been giving that some thought, as I don't think I'll stay for a second Trump reign if he is elected.

It might be enough to move to Alaska, as it's not often reckoned as the States by most Americans, and I lived there before. But, if I were to literally emigrate, Australia, Great Britain, and Iceland come to mind. I like the cold, so it would not be northern Australia.

I'm also curious about the Nordic countries. I'd have to travel first to have an informed opinion. Most people want to live in warm climes and around beaches. I'm not a fan of tourist spots.
