Mongolian wrestler loses bronze medal match after celebrating too early. Man in red was a point in front but was docked a point for the early celebration. Therefore man in green won bout on a countback. Coaches protest by stripping in front of judges.
I tried to find a video of the fight last night. To understand more easily, at the 5:30 mark, the Mongolian wrestler, Ganzorigiin Mandakhnaran, was down 2 points, with Uzbekistan's Ikhtiyor Navruzov leading 6 to 4. Fifteen seconds later, Mongolia scored 2 points, tying the match, and then scored another point to bring him to the lead at 7-6 over Uzbekistan. With 6 seconds still left in the match, Navruzov tried to engage Mandakhnaran, but Mandakhnaran threw up his arms in victory and danced around the arena, clearly evading any contact with Navruzov. Navruzov finally threw up his arms in exasperation.
The match ended and Mandakhnaran began his real celebrations and was on his knees when he discovered that the referee had awarded him a penalty point to Navruzov for Mandakhnaran's evasive celebration tactics. That brought the score to a 7-7 tie, and, by Olympic wrestling rules, the scorer of the last point wins the match.
Mandakhnaran had a meltdown on the mat and the coaches went ballistic. The man with his pants still on tore off his shirt, shoes, and socks before the other coach tried to calm him down, but, as the judges refused to change their minds despite their protests, he went a step farther and took off his pants, too. The judges then awarded Navruzov another penalty point against the coaches, bringing the final score to 8-7 for Navruzov.
Mandakhnaran refused to participate in the hand-raising ceremony for the winner, but he did cross the mat to give Navrazov a hug.
It will be interesting to see if those coaches are ever allowed to participate in an international wrestling meet again.
