The term sounds like a mechanism to sweep America's spontaneous class system under the rug by blaming the poor for being poor and worse. In the land of opportunity, they don't even have the excuse of racial discrimination and having been there so long they should have established their networks and old boys clubs, so it must be because they're decadent and lazy. It's quite Victorian, although probably something the Daily Mail would push if they were more supportive of other poor demographics.

All things considered, I know remarkably few of our equivalent. My neighbourhood was rather mixed with its social housing estate, the local gentry's estate, the travellers' camp and the most expensive road in the county, but I never really got to know that many people.

It's not so confusing actually.
White trash has negative connotation, therefore the term identifies with cultural "embarrassment." which concentrated heavily in southern area of US while the term spread across US labeling uncultured white people with lack of moral and mannerism (England and perhaps Europe have their own term too).
However, If one choose not to carry himself in embarrassing matter (i.e= well mannered, educated,etc) even though he lives in the south and came from that concentrated area- he's not included in white trash- term, easy that is.

Individualism will prevail culture.

Agreed. Watch Jerry Springer and you will see the live version of white trash and that of every other race. Mostly uneducated and complete lack of shame. However, I believe at any given moment in all of our checkered pasts, we all are probably quilty of being utter trash at one time or another.

I don't know that he will tell me anything, we have a mutual respect for each other so please don't drag another poster in to our exchange, I am one who believes that if people apply themselves they can do well in life. Do well in my book means to be a productive citizen and to fulfill our end of the social contract that we assume by residing with others.

Some people are not as well equipped as others, many due to neglect in their formative years need instruction and help, as we as a society sow, so shall we reap. Neglect and contempt for those who fall through the cracks in life's highway will give us the results that we see today.

High crime rates, disfunctional families, substance abuse, homelessness and alike are the result of contempt and neglect, it does indeed take a village to work together for the common good and the eventual universal brotherhood of all of mankind in a classless society where all contribute according to their ability and all receive according to their need.

Not horribly removed from my first "chore" at home - loading and unloading the silverware from the dishwasher each night. I got ten cents a week for that one.

But if every race has 'trash', what is the purpose of the racial distinction? Is the implication that each race has a different kind of trash?

I'm apprehensive about calling any person trash, though unfortunately there are those who are so reprehensible in character that they earn the label. The racial element of white trash, or black trash, or latin trash, or whatever else, only leaves me less inclined to use the label though. I mean, if somebody is acting like an arsehole, my only inclination will be to call them an arsehole. Not a black arsehole or a white arsehole, just an arsehole. I can't see any reason to bring race into the equation outside of feeling the need to say something racist.

As for Broke Straight Boys, and at the risk of sounding even more insufferably smug, I've never found the concept to be erotic in any way (provided the concept is straight men having sex with other men for money). If I'm watching sex, I want to see that the people involved are enjoying it. I'm not going to judge the character of those who are participating though, and I certainly wouldn't dehumanise them by calling them trash. I'd just close the tab and find something that did interest me.
