I have noticed recently that people I have always thought of as "white"--and who are classified as such by the census, such as Armenians and Persians--are now referring to "whites" as if they themselves aren't. (This doesn't include my partner and his family, who are Armenian but have light brown hair and blue eyes and who would be appalled that anyone didn't consider them to be "white".)

Speaking of the census, there is an effort of late on the part of some Near Easterners and North Africans to be classified by the census as a group separate from "whites", a move prompted in no small part by a desire to benefit from the great variety of minority entitlements and set asides now encouraged and often mandated. "Benefit"="Cash In", as both Persians and Armenians have enjoyed great economic success in the US, with high median income and all of the resulting benefits. This would be frosting on the cake.

^ Well, since "whites" do not consider them as members of their club...

I always assumed, from by share of global education through American TV shows, that the proper and definitive term for all that would be "Caucasian"... though I recall a relatively recent (less than one year ago), in which one of those cop shows made a distinction and "white? no, Puerto Rican" or something of the sort.

See what I said: according to that map, only "Europe" is properly "white". The Mediterranean Basin is a continent apart.

It says "native population": I guess the bogan wave would have replaced them all through drowning by now... although I remember watching some travelogue TV show about Melbourne or Sydney, and there were still some pretty pissed Abs festering in their bitterness about the invasion and genocide they [STRIKE]suffered[/STRIKE] are suffering.
