In the early hours this morning and after a twelve hour debate, Argentina's Lower House of Congress (Camara de Diputados) approved the gay marriage law as well as the law allowing adoptions by gay couples!!!! The vote was 129 in favor 109 against with 6 absentions. The law was immediately submitted to Argentina's Upper House (Camara del Senado) for approval. There it will be met with a lengthy debate and could suffer modifications but mostly likely will be approved in it's orignal form as submitted by the lower house. It will be a real close vote. Argentina's president (Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner) has stated that she would sign the new law and put it into effect immediately. Congrats to Argentina!!!! A step forward for everyone!!!

And, another country that will have gay marriage before the USA. And, Argentina is such a heavily Catholic Country. Odd, the Modern Gay Rights Movement started in the USA, and it appears more and more likely we will be the last to get Gay Marriage, but I am extremely happy for the persons of Argentina.

One of the legislators that had abstained her vote was Elisa Carrio, a very vocal and popular opposition leader and very vocally supportive of the Roman Catholic Church, stated that she abstained her vote to not go into a conflict with her religious beliefs, but that if her vote was need she would favor of the law that legalized same-sex marriage, she could not vote against the gay community.
The different political party leaders told their legislators that they were free to vote their conscious and not along party lines.
What surprised me was how the legislators that supposedly represent the province of which I currently live. ALL voted against the law, to the applause of members of the Catholic Church that were present during the debate.
Former President Kirchner, who had not returned to Congress since being sworn-in to his legislative seat returned to vote in favor of the law and announced that he will be seeking a leave of abscence since he was selected yesterday by South American presidents to Secretary General of the newly formed UNASUR (Union of the South American Nations).
Next post to include fotos of last nights congressional session.

This is really cool, since Argentina is one of the places I would possibly like to emigrate to in the future.

I moved here from Chicago 14 years ago at the ripe old age of 29 and haven't regretted it yet.

Yes, I am well aware that Scanadivan Countries have moved to the forefront, but the whole thing got started here in the 1950s. And before that it was the 1920s in Germany. Needless to say I will stand by my assertion that it is years away in the USA. Hell, even the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Hate Crime Act is up in Federal Court in Michigan.
