Arrested For Being Black At Barney's, NYC

the trick is to get a credit card that gives you points/miles/cash back with no annual fee, and pay off the balance each month (though it does require the self control to not spend more than you'll be able to pay off)

this way, you're earning a bonus for using the card, not paying interest since you're paying it off, and it gives you added protection in case your card gets stolen (with a real credit card, a disputed transaction will be held up until it's resolved. with a debit card, the money is gone and out of your account already until it's resolved)

That's one of the few good reasons to use credit. I also have one card I use for medical expenses,so a separate record of what I've spent is generated.

I actually do not sign the back of any of my debit or credit cards. Reason is because as soon as I hand them my card they see its not signed and ask for my ID. Then they normally tell me to sign my card and I tell them NO. I leave them un-signed because it means they are supposed to ask for ID and my hope is if it ever gets stolen they can't use it or at least not much if they don't have a matching ID.

I used to get an argument sometimes over not having the back of my card signed, but I've found a great response that has never been questioned: on a TV special here once (about identity theft), Senator Wyden stated that no one should sign the back of a credit card, but should write "see picture ID". When I say I don't sign it because my U.S. senator said not to, I sometimes get asked what his reason was, but have never gotten an argument.

Maybe you and reone need to get a dictionary and look up what "ignorance" actually means.

Lack of knowledge, education, or awareness - like, I don't know, saying someone should be lucky they weren't shot over their name would exhibit both a lack of education and awareness.

Maybe you need to quit while you're behind. I know you're just trying to get a rise out of people by being inane, but sometimes, you'd benefit from keeping your narrow thoughts to yourself, or go back to targeting islam with Telstra, leave the other discussions alone.

^ it's a 'high class' store, so it doesn't want to be seen to have police in their store detaining suspects - it sends the wrong message to the other shoppers, that it has criminals wanting to defraud them.

This is probably why they decided for the guy and the lady who bought stuff to leave the shop so that the arrests can be made away from the establishment, and that the two people are made to look like criminals out in the public. Barneys can then say, we didn't do anything like call the police. Those 'undercover' cops did it on a whim.

But Barney's did "own" up that they had undercover cops. As I've stated before, we don't know for sure the arrest was racially motivated. The store was trying to protect itself from a history of legitimate fraud attempts.

I'm not saying correlation equals causation, but certain people with certain names end up in prison a lot less than others with different names.

The fact that there is a store selling $350 belts means that it is perfectly acceptable to buy $350 belts.

Are they not aware that sometimes young people either have money or save up for a special purchase?

And seriously, who answers this kind of phone call "Excuse me Officer! I'd like to report a shopper who appears to have been better at saving money than I was at his age." "OKAY - don't panic! We're sending a SWAT team!"

LOL

Love it.

I won't descend to schoolboy abuse like you do—

but you're saying that you choose to give words whatever meaning you want depending on the situation or your mood.

Nope! Just a great command of the Queens English, and "knowing all about context",just saying.

On the contrary, you obtusely refuse to ever recognize proper context, and invariably in a manner which leads you to an offensive conclusion.

Also LOL at schoolboy reference when you're agreeing with someone saying with a "name like that" the police should have just shot him.

. . . . .

Writing in Social Science Quarterly, Shippensburg University professor David Kalist says giving newborn males oddball, girly or strange first names may just help land them in jail.

In alphabetical order, the Top 10 “bad boy” names, according to Kalist, are Alec, Ernest, Garland, Ivan, Kareem, Luke, Malcolm, Preston, Tyrell and Walter.

. . . . .

Just an interesting little article. Could be a thread of its own, I suppose.

Where is the justice.I am sitting here watching fox news, a woman in florida was shoplifting in a grocery store( it didn't say if she was black or white). The cops do not arrest her they pay for what she stole. It was something like three hunderd dollars worth of stuff. And they are saying that the cops are doing a good thing by paying for her crime. On the other hand you have a young man who made a legal purchase was arrested. With a debit card you have to enter a pin number for the transaction to be process. Its like what Oprah Winfrey encounter when she was looking at the purse and the sales lady would not sell it to her. Just ranting here

What's "oddball, girly or strange" about Alec, Luke, Malcolm, or Walter? (I knew several of each in college.)

Be careful. You only question 4 of the 10 names given.

One of JUB's most incessant whiners might deem you ignorant. :)

Eh, not really that interesting of a study. Not all that convincing.

I have yet to see/read the actual study, myself. Do you have a link to it?

I do find it interesting that there has been enough interest in the names connection to do at least this one study mentioned in the article that I linked.

I'd like to see more.

Are you fucking KIDDING me? He didn't look like someone who would have $350? He's a kid getting a college education in engineering with a job. What about him "didn't look like" such a thing were possible?

Perhaps he should have had a large exposed/visible tattoo that would show/prove that he could easily piss away 6 or 7 hundred dollars. :)

The United States is the most bigoted country of the so called free world. I am whiter than white, and will never live there again. If you think I am wrong just look at comments on the CBS news website for example when it has to do with Obama. Read the comments and compare them to ones against or for Bush. They were political these are down right racist. Yahoo news too check it out. If he wanted to spend twice as much on a belt it is his business. He should sue Barneys and The Police, he will win and then can go to Armani.

You forgot to mention your dual citizenship....................
