As of today, how many “best friends” have you had in your life? If you ended up with more than 1 best friend in your life, what happened to the last one(s), and how long were you “best friends”?

In my case, I had 2 “best friends” and I’m with my 3rd best friend now :-)

Back in 2001, I ended up losing my 2nd best friend of almost 20 years, due to irreconcilable differences. During the last year of our friendship, we would argue abo
ut almost every “other” thing that the other said. So after a year, I got tired of the constant disagreements and bickering.

I now have a new best friend (#3), as of 2006. I love my best friend to death, as he is the brother that I never had. (*8*)

My 1st and original “best friend” I had from 2nd to 6th grade, he pretty much abandoned me when he started going through puberty and started liking girls. Then he started chasing after girls (which I wanted no parts of, since I liked the boys), in our 7th grade year at junior high school. Then we quickly stopped hanging out and telephoning each other, and we found it awkward to put 2 words together when our paths crossed at school, until we graduated from high school. Yet since I was on the flamboyant side in the 5th and 6th grade and a lot of my classmates had already started calling me a faggot, I think my “best friend” thought the same and wanted to distance himself from me. So I did not get a 2nd best friend until I was 18 years old and in college.

Lord, I don't know. I don't recall ranking my friends from "best" to "worst" ever. There are short periods of time when I seem to draw really close to somebody, only to drift a bit apart afterward. If I defined "best friend" as "the go-to guy whenever something comes up and I want to talk to/do something with him", then...let's see.

? - 1981 John
1982 - 1984 sort of drifted, not many close friends
1984 - 1986 Ali
1986 - 1990 Geoff
1990 - 1996 Adam
1996 - 1998 Eli
1998 - current Pubert

So...six? Again, that's using that definition, and looking holistically. I recall becoming really friendly with a couple people for really short periods of time, only to drift apart fairly quickly.

G-Lexington, and AWP82. Thank you for the great feedback. ..| AWP82, you don't have a "best friend" as an adult?

I guess in my original post, I guess I should have defined a basic definition of a "best friend" to help facilitate my question. At this time, I'll do so in the next 3 paragraphs.

Some definitions of a "best friend":

Someone you love and trust with your most intimate and personal self. Someone with has access to your ear and heart 24/7. Someone whom you would do anything for without hesitation.

The person you are closest to emotionally without romantic attachments. Typically, you will communicate with your best friend more frequently than other friends. For example, you may spend an entire day together and then call each other up that night to talk about your day! Best friends accept you for who you are and allow you to be yourself.

Typical characteristics of a best friend include someone who you can laugh easily with, a person who "gets you," and someone you share a great deal of things in common with.

i have no idea. i don't believe in the word best friend or friend for that matter when it comes to people. sure, i have small circle of homies but the word friend though to me doesn't exists. i think a best friend could be a dog, a cat or a pet because a dog, cat or pet will never leave you once they get to know you. you treat them right and they got your back forever. can't say the same thing for a human though. human beings will disappoint you even when you do everything right. people are people which is why i don't trust a single person in the world. not even myself but i will find myself a little bit more trustworthy with myself than i will with anybody else even my own mother (i love you mom). a dog will never leave you for being gay. a human being will.

3. The very first from Jr. High... we still talk every week. Nothing has changed except we are both 48.
The second, also from Jr. High. He has moved away and we don't talk as much. But still do.
The third, and also sadly the one I had a crush on in my 20's.... life and marriage changed him... a lot. I'd say looking back that "best friend" was probably more on my part, not his. He has made no attempt to stay in touch.

So my TRUE best friend is number 1. NOTHING that happened in our lives has ever stood between our friendship, and even to this day we can talk about everything in our private lives. And I do mean EVERYTHING. No judgements.

We are truly blessed to have ONE true friend. Most, sadly, are transitory.

5 for me... one as a little kid, one through high school, another after that, and then the last few years have changed quite a bit, I wetn a long time without a real one, then had one for only about a year, and now another new one for about a year.

None really. Never had that kind of relationship with anyone.

.
I have friends but don't have any "best friends".
Best friends means helping each other no questions ask and NO secrets.

3. I stopped thinking that way around the end of high school. I have friends I treasure now, but I don't think of any of them as "best".

Two. One is now dead. I would give almost anything to know what happened to the other one. He just disappeared from my life and I have no clue why. I miss him.

I have two best friends concurrently. I've known each of them about 15 years. I had a few people I considered best friends when I was younger, but now that I have these two, I really understand what 'Best Friend' means.

What does it mean? :)

I would say I have 5 official best friends and I'm extremely lucky to have them. Two of them I trust far more than the other three, but that has to do with I think knowing them longer. Its a trust thing I guess. One has been my best friends since I was born in 1992, she is my cousin. Another is a guy I have been close friends with since age 5. Two others have become close best friends over the past 5 or so years, and another is a guy who I have been getting to know over the past year. Unfortunately...distance keeps that friendship from blossoming into anything more. :/

I've had other people that were "best friends" but in all honestly they were people who walked out on me and therefore I don't consider them to be best friends at all. Which is sort of sad, but I think if you have a true best friend they will stay that way for life.

One. But that friendship has endured for almost 35 years.

Not a whole lot of best friends. The best friend I had stole from me, so I cut him off and stopped talking to him after Middle School. After the next best friends broke up and I kind of haven't talked to them in years, the best friend I have now lives in Poland and the other one I have now doesn't consider me his best friend (he has a BFF) he's always popular with other people so he hangs out with his other friends, never has time for me. So would that make him not a best friend then?

Two. Other friends have come and gone, but two really stand out. I met the first in kindergarten, and we were friends until I was 21. Then he kinda went nuts, and I'm still not really sure why. He's an actor and I guess he's too good for me now that he's on TV. :##: I still miss him a lot. (27 now)

I met my "current" best friend about a year ago. (on craigslist of all places) Even though we haven't known eachother that long I think he's the best friend I've ever had. The more I get to know him the more we get along. I've never had such strong feelings for somebody that I did not want to have sex with - it really feels great.:)

tiny few humans on planet earth wot not loons out a backside a supa awsum amazin world modern cultures

* yes life is payin attention ta ya *

thankyou

hope da millions a toons start helpin ya

It's very hard to define my friends, since the closer I am to someone, the less I talk to them. Weird, right?

So far...two. One is closer to me than the other...maybe because we are polar opposites. Although I sometimes feel like a fly disturbing him when he hangs out with his girlfriend and I. The other one is in another country, but she is really enthusiastic about our friendship it will likely not die in another decade.

Not a lot, two in high school. And a few in college.
