Ask a Canuck

Everyone likes Snowbird, but this is my favourite Anne Murray song....

^ Thanks. Cogeco doesn't carry it, but it shares some programming with TVO, and there are a few programmes I plan on watching through the website. Got it bookmarked.

What part/parts of Canada do other Canadians hate the most ?

The French talking Quebecs ?

Is Bret Hart still doing meet and greets in Calgary...???

The French talking Quebecs ?

Not at all. Quebec is culturally rich, breathtakingly beautiful, and a favourite destination. If you go there and can't speak a word of French and you need help, most Quebecois who don't speak English will go out of their way to find someone who does. Oh, and they love to party and have fun.

The prairie provinces, especially Saskatchewan generally don't have a good reputation in the rest of Canada. We're thought of as backwoods rednecks, and we're lovingly referred to as "the gap" because of the terrain.
I wouldn't go so far as to say everyone hates us though. :)

That's true. Some Canadians might not like the prairies because there is so much flat, some might not like Ontario because it's too crowded, some might not like the Maritimes because they don't like seafood, some might not like the north because it's too damned cold, and some might not like the mountains because, well, let's face it, when you've seen one mountain, you've seen them all.

But 'hate'? I can't think of a single place.

OK boys, let's hear it about the election results. :grrr: or (!)

(Remember, the UP was very close to being Canadian except for the War of 1812...)

Justin Trudeau and his Liberals won at least 170 of the 338 Parliament seats, as far as I've read this very second.
Congratulations!

The Cuntservatives won in my constituency. Strategic voting ended up not working at all... but hey, Let's see where this new majority Liberal government takes us!

I wonder what would happen if the Rhinoceros Party actually got a seat in parliament?

You know, I've actually BEEN to Kapuskasing! :D

I also see BQ won 10 seats? Is yet another separatist movement afoot? (I think it would be a big mistake).

FYI, for the record, moving to Canada is always an option for me, as The Partner has Permanent Landed Immigrant status, so if you guys get it together we might consider moving...:D

I think Harper just got caught up in too many lies and scandals. It was a very close race all the way through, but Harper kept digging his hole deeper and deeper. I also think that the straw which broke the camel's back was his association with the Ford brothers from Toronto. It is difficult to preach about the evils of marijuana when you're in bed with an (alleged) ex-pusher and a self-proclaimed crack smoker and alcoholic.

Harper's 'reign of terror' is over. No more Government of Harper!!

Oh, and I bet Harper's uber-rich cronies are going to be pissed. They're going to lose their child benefits and will have to start paying taxes!

Does it feel good to be rid of the asshole Harper?

Conservatives South and North of the 49th parallel are losing their shit. Pamela Geller wrote an opinion on her blog?

Comments are rather telling.

That damn sky just will NOT stay up there.

Indeed. He did more to ruin Canada's place in the world than any past prime minister. Until Harper, we were known as a nation of peacekeepers. Now we are warmongers. He turned his back on the UN and everything he has done against ISIS has failed. Now, with Justin, our 'war machines' will be withdrawn and we will educate rather than fight.

Virtually everything he did for Canada benefited the wealthy. His child tax benefit was sent out to Canadian parents of children under the age of 18 and still living at home, no matter how much money they had or earned. Parent had to apply for it, though. The wealthy also earned enormous tax breaks, and his income-sharing (allowing a spouse to claim a portion of the earnings) didn't work for single-parent families, and the sharing benefited only the upper class. None of his initiatives actually helped the people who really needed it.

Justin is going to change all of that.

It was funny, though. Harper's campaign was meant to kill the liberals (he succeeded with Ignatieff a few years ago), but it backfired this time. He selectively quoted Justin, hanging on one phrase in his attack ads: "the budget will balance itself." Yes, Justin said that, but here is the entire quote: "the commitment needs to be a commitment to grow the economy and the budget will balance itself”. Growing the economy was something Harper didn't do. In fact, he denied the fact that Canada was headed toward a recession and did nothing to counteract it. He just hoped it would go away, I suppose.

Another thing he focused on was Justin planning on abolishing pension sharing for seniors, something which Justin never even implied would happen. But the biggest thing I believe which brought the party to its knees was Harper's obsession with the niqab fiasco. Too much ado about wanting to impose a dress code on Canada. It was tried back in 1990 when a Sikh mountie won the right to wear a turban as part of his uniform.

I won't even get into the senate troubles (including one right here in Peterborough with our ex-MP who is now serving time in jail for election fraud) and all of the other Conservative scandals.

Oh, well. It was(n't) fun while it lasted.

And John Oliver? You're safe. ..|
