For the socially conscious consumer, Starbucks tries its best to achieve economic transparent relations with its coffee bean growers. I don't want to delve too much into it, but a lot of our beans would be considered "fair trade beans" had the standards not been so high. If all our beans were just fair trade beans, they'd be more expensive than they are now. This part might be outdated, but our one and only fair trade bean-- the "Cafe Estima"-- is supposed to be highlighted as the COW every other week or something. So yeah, it's partly why the beans cost so much. Someone with concrete knowledge on the C.A.F.E. practices can tell you more.
Concerning the "fair trade" policies.... Cafe Estima is the only one that actually has the fair trade label...however all of our coffee is technically "fair trade" coffee its just that somewhere along the way it goes through some process ...whether its the packaging, the transporting, or the handling at a certain point... that doesn't meet the fair trade guidlelines... which is why none of the ther ones are allowed to actually boast the fair trade logo....
