Been off of diet soda and all aspartame for 4 days now. I am having a few withdrawals, most of all a slight nagging headache. I made the choice to stop because I was having dizzieness, headaches and some memory loss. After doing some "online research" there is some scary information out there about the substance. I was wondering has anyone else had any experiences with coming off of diet soda or aspartame?

It's probably not the aspartame. This sounds a lot like caffeine withdrawal.

Aspartame (aka nutrasweet) has been linked to joint pain, headaches, fatigue, gulf-war syndrome, and mis-diagnoses of multiple sclerosis, among other things. The info is widely available onthe net, but the mainstream press is curiously(?) not carrying any stories or warnings. I only found out about it myself this summer, when I was experiencing severe joint pain. I ceased consumption of any nutrasweet and the pain went away, gradually, over a period of weeks. Now, I read ALL labels and avoid the stuff like the plague it is.

It seems it metabolises in the body as FORMIC ACID and FORMALDEHYDE. The substances are neuro-toxins and not recommended for human consumption. Formic acid is what is secreted by fire-ants and wasps.

Nutrasweet is manufactured by a major drug company. It was pushed through the FDA pdq. You do the math.

I think a glass of alcohol contains much more methanol which is also metabolized to formaldehyde and formic acid. The amounts of aspartame contained in soda drinks are rather tiny...

Anyway I'd only drink water. Drinks with sugar (except wine) are just bad

How much is too much?

"There are 180 mg of aspartame in a 12 ounce can of diet soda"
3-4 a day=540-720mgs

I don't think it can be dismissed so quickly.

I have been off of all known aspartame for a week and i feel fine, I miss the soda though.

Oh I didn't know that it's that much. Anyway only 10% (30 a.u. per MeOH/ ~300 a.u. per Aspartame) are metabolized to methanol. That's 70 mg then. I don't know whether this is already dangerous... the lethal dose is 6-10 ml for an adult. So maybe it has an effect. Surprising...

Anyway... did you know that the feed pig with it. They get an insulin peak from it which lowers their blood sugar level. The latter then causes extreme hunger and they eat more.
I think this could be the reason for your problems. If you drink these sodas without eating any quick carbs it can well be that your blood sugar is going down. This is more likely than MeOH poisoning I guess...

Cheers

that is interesting, some people claim to have carb cravings when they stop consuming aspartame
I haven't had that problem my diet is has always been pretty balanced and I am very active.

The whole aspartame is a complete factoid, it's an artificial sweetener that has built up conspiracies on gossip and hearsay. Soda is just plain wrong for you, maybe if you look at the other ingredients, say caffiene or HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that one is a definite no no for your metabolism. It's healthier just to refrain from processed sugar and anything artificial, raw cane, honey, and fruits are your best source of sugar cravings.

No argument there ..|

although people do look for "conspiracies" and latch onto scapegoats, it is hard to dismiss substances like aspartame and the possibility that it could have worse effects on some than once thought
