I dunno. After 28 you may start thinking about hitting 30, yet life is not so very much different when you get here anyway. I chose 28 as well though in reality I think people may consider themselves to be pushing 30 anywhere between 27 and 28. As English is not my native language, I first heard the expression on my 28th birthday.

Whenever I hear the term 'pushing 30' (or 40, 50, 60, 70, etc) I assume it means that the person is in the final year of the previous decade: ie, 29, 39, 49, 59, etc.
