Atheists and Prayer

Well that depends on what kind of an atheist you are. Buddhism is technically an atheistic religion and as you know...there are plenty of people who pray in that religion. I'm an atheist/buddhist and I pray whenever I feel the need to pray. It's just that my prayers go to a dead philosopher whom probably reincarnated? who knows. Still fun to pray though :)

Why would I pray if there's fuck all to pray to? Any "health-giving" effects that prayer has on your avarage god botherer is a big fat placebo.

Must be a lonely existence being atheist. All you have is your material possessions. And you die, you die... you're just a piece of meat, ready to rot and decompose.

Did anyone NOT pick up the extreme irony in a nihilist telling someone how miserable they must be?

Lonely...no. I have lots of people in my life to stave that off. I always imagined religion being the realm of the lonely. Desperately convincing yourself that your imaginary friend is actualy real. Pretty pathetic.

That's so true...lol..George Carlin speak the truth!

Being an atheist is being like anti-police. Sure, you hate the police and think they're stupid. But when your house is getting robbed, you're going to scream and call them for help. And indeed they will help you, despite your insolence. When the shit hits the fan and you're in a pool of blood, you're going to think about God. The thoughts of a dying atheist always result in spirituality.

How the fuck do you know what a dying atheist thinks? What ridiculous thing to say. You honestly think that being stabbed is going to invoke the desire to be helped by a supposedly loving god? Quite the opposite. God loves me, that's why he allowed me to be turned into a teabag. Don't talk such utter fucking rubbish.

That those statements touch nerves so powerfully is very telling. Just wait and see. BTW: Not a theist.

"Methinks he doth protest too much" is one of the clichés offering the least amount of insight.

Sometimes people just get annoyed with presumptuous nonsense and they don't feel any particular obligation to restrain themselves. And sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

all the more reason to enjoy life in the NOW and enjoy it to the fullest, as opposed to hoping there's better "after". :)

For the thread question: no i don't pray.

I talk to myself pretty often though.

Do you sacrifice a goat when you want something to go well? No, you don't, because that would be useless. Same reason I don't pray. It's pointless, I know it won't do anything. So I just hope that things will work out, know that it's out of my control (and when it isn't out of my control, do whatever I can to help things work out), and so there's not much else I can do.
