Sick of Microsoft fans going on about the latest niblick in Vista?

Just show them Beryl. All the eye-candy of Vista and more, and it doesn't need a brand-new graphics card and 2GB of RAM to run :)

Take a look:

LOL, welcome to Mac OS X circa 2003 ;-)

Nah I kid.... thats cool the OpenSource guys have implemented this, even this version is slicker than Vista :D

i've been using something similar (yet simpler) for years - 3deskd. it is always something to impress windows users. "did your desktop just flip horizontally?" yes .. "what and now you have 4 desktops each on one side of a cube" yes .. "i want that too!" sorry you have windows

ok...don't shoot me for this. It's cool and all, but why do you need multiple desktops? can't the same thing be achieved by having stuff in different windows on your desktop and just minimizing the stuff you aren't looking at?

I'm with mike_n_herrin. There is no need for multiple desktops:

1. Today's monitors have a big enough resolution, so you can easily have two programs open next to each other that you are working on or comparing data and additionally an instant messenger in a corner somewhere.

2. A dual-screen setup has more class.

3. Instead of 4 switchable desktops, the AmigaOS has a function where you can define the size of the desktop, apart from the monitor resolution. When the mouse pointer reaches the border, the desktop scrolls in that direction.

i just love multiple desktops. one has my e-mail program open all the time, on one i have gaim and all the converstaions open, on another i have multiple log file viewers etc and on desktop #1 i work :)

Well...the thing is until Linux is able to run the same applications that Windows can run, Linux is never going be accepted as a home user OS. Is there any way I can run Quicken and TurboTax on Linux? What about all those games that people like to play that run on Windows. What about when I'm working I'm at home and the connection/security software is Windows. What if I need to create or save a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet or make a Powerpoint presentation. I need Windows. Is there a Win-Linux session you can do all that stuff, reliably without abending? If I have to dual boot to Windows all the time, why bother? Cool does not mean useful.

Beryl, xgl and so on are certainly very lovely, but I'm just happy with plain ole' KDE and multiple desktops. I have six desktops: one for coding, one for document preparation, one for email, one for web browsing, and two others for miscellaneous tasks.

The nice thing for me about multiple desktops is that I can switch to the one corresponding to a particular task, and there it all is - nicely uncluttered and ready to go.

Looks nice, but I can't make Xgl work on my computer, and therefore I can't make Beryl work. I'll try to update the drivers but I think I have the latest version already.

What graphics card do you have? If you've got an nVidia with the latest drivers, you don't need Xgl.

It's also possible that your X-server has AIGLX built in, which will also mean you don't need it (this is the way I run it)
