Here is an odd one. A Marine veteran was making " I will sharpen my sword and lop off heads" and "Revolution" comments on his facebook. His FB was purportedly private and open to only a few friends. What is unclear is whether the Federal Government was monitoring it for content or if a friend who saw it reported the man.

He was interviewed by law enforcement. Taken in for a temporary psychiatric evaluation and then by a judges order remanded to treatment for 30 days.

Some folks I have heard say it is a violation of his free speech. I disagree. Facebook is a social media. So running through it's pages shouting your gonna kill folks is the same to me as if you were running through a crowded mall.

This I think is the action and reaction we should take and expect in this day and age. No longer can we ignore people when they shout aloud they will kill others.

What say all of you?

facebook is an open pool.

You never put anything on it that you would not want on a resume, and if there are any friends that you would prefer not see it, then you have a bad way of picking facebook friends.

Yeah.. I tend to think this is less about freedom of speech and more about one individual's inability to use it responsibly.

There is no private part of facebook, in a legal sense, i believe. you can limit access to individuals, but not businesses or the gov't. whatever you put there, like here, becomes property of that site, and it is used at their discretion.

So, more like a garden party -- people can stop on the other side of the bushes, or look down from the balcony next door.

facebook has a way of changing its privacy policies without notice. I have to believe its in the original service agreement you check off when you join. the onus is on you the user to know it. Its one of the biggest complaints about FB... the privacy issue. I think at this point its buyer beware, even though the service is free

I hear the Zuck's days are numbered as CEO

There is no privacy on face book. I've had friends who have learned that the hard way.
As for this case, vague threats are one thing but if you state that you will kill people or undertake violent actions, they can arrest you.

So it's like a garden party where someone can remove the fence and bushes and turn you and your friends into a public spectacle.

Wonderful.

If it was really in a private part of FB, then it's no different than the cops eavesdropping on a group of friends in one's home, without a warrant.

SO Kuli do you believe if at your private garden party you were saying you would like to start a revolution, sharpen your swords and lop off some heads then one of your friends AT the party told the cops that Kuli is planning to kill people so then following on the police interview you and determine you are sufficiently disturbed to warrant further counsel by trained psychologist and then the psychologist determined you should be evaluated for a month... that is some clandestine eavesdropping program?

No problem. But if the police find out there's no cause, then in a just world I'll be reimbursed for my time and compensated for the disturbance to my life.

Right but someone spoke up, he was questioned and then interviewed by mental crisis personnel and then a judge ruled he should be evaluated further.

Honestly THIS is exactly the sort of action and reaction our society needs to prevent the useless and tragic loss of life that occurs when mental illness is ignored. This should be trumpeted to the nation as a smashing success.

The guy doesn't seem very bright at all

I question his judgement

Its very rare that I agree with both of you at once, but I do in this instance.

wow

In a turn around he was released by a judge who found they did not follow Virginia law to the letter. In the same article the journalist pointed out that 20,000 ( yes thousand) Virginians are held each year based off that same law.

Scurrryyyyyy!

Either that many people were insane or the law is taking amazing liberty or removing an amazing amount of liberty. Either view is scary as fuck.

Hey, cops need something to do when they're bored!
