The devastating bushfires in Victoria have so far claimed 65 lives and at least 700 homes have been lost. I'm sitting here watching the news reports on the television. It's awful and I'm crying at the stories I'm hearing. One of the saddest is of a firefighter whose wife and two children were trapped in their house and burned to death while he was out helping fight the fires.

I'm praying for the communities affected and hope that their nightmare will end soon.

Yet such tragedies reveal the best in the human being, when we note the heroic actions of so many people, including fire fighters and the neighbourliness, of people offering so much practical help to those who are in need of a home, nourishment and sympathetic understanding of their losses.

I thought I'd better take care of some "mod duties" first.

It has been devastating in Victoria. They have had the highest temperatures on record - with over 40DegC for days on end - so it was always likely to be bad. Unfortunately, I doubt anyone expected it to be this bad. What makes it even worse is that many of the fires are believed to have been started by arsonists.

Marysville and Kinglake are two townships (IIRC about 600 people in each) that have been almost totally obliterated from the map - just about every single building razed to the ground. The firefront that took them is still raging out of control and thought to be 80Kms wide.

The death toll is expected to go much higher. Authorities are only just getting into some areas that have been badly hit and many people are known to be unaccounted for - and, of course, the many fires are still raging. Multiple fires in both Victoria and NSW - while Western Australia and North Queensland are suffering floods. A five year old boy is believed to have been taken by a croc in the North Queensland floods.

And some people are still claiming that climate change doesn't exist?!!!
 
Heard on the news just now that the death toll has gone up to 66, and will probably rise even higher.

but the fire can teach people WORLD WIDE what to do to survive a fire storm. It was and still is a huge fire storm.

We're actually on bushfire alert here in WA now, too. There was a fire in Kings Park, Perth, on Friday (believed to have been deliberately lit) and yesterday afternoon Bunker Bay Resort in the state's south west and nearby beaches were evacuated as a bushfire raged in the Cape Naturaliste area.

A heatwave is expected this week, with the forecast peaking at 40C on Thursday, pushing the fire ratings to the extreme. There are also gusty morning winds forecast - perfect fire breeding conditions! :eek:

Ironically, we had a bushfire close to where we live today; too close for comfort in fact!! I live opposite a very bushy part of town, and the fire started earlier this afternoon a fair way from where we live, but heading our way! We've had a police car stationed at the top of our street all afternoon directing traffic away from the blaze, and a water bombing plane has done its thing at least a dozen times over it. It's now 6.40pm as I type this and it looks like the fire is finally under control. Hopefully, we'll be able to rest easy tonight!

Just the other day I purchased a picture book of Australian cities and backcountry.......the pictures reminded me how beautiful Australia is.......I wish all Australian friends the best.......please stay safe.......

i think most of us live in suburbs or cities ... pretty safe there. :)
 
I've been thinking about you folks all night.

There was a frightening mid-winter fire here a couple of weeks ago. My great-aunt and her husband were evacuated for a while. It was scary.

PLEASE stay safe!
 
I feel sorry for all the families who have lost someone in the fire but I still don't understand bush fires at all.:confused:

It's shocking, shocking beyond belief. Whole towns and communities have been wiped off the map, people have lost everything they had, the devastation is enormous.

The latest news is that Brian Naylor, a much loved (and long retired) newsreader, has died in the fires, along with his wife.

Death toll now at 84. It's a very sad day in Australia. I pray for all those who've suffered and lost love ones. I hope the badly needed rains will come soon.
