So who else is following it?

Any predictions?

I must admit, I am reluctant to forecast a winner for either the mens/womens - they appear to be closer than for many previous years - but there has already been some great tennis, good stories and one or two surprising results. I will admit to hoping that Andy Murray finally breaks through for a win - I have been touting him as having enormous potential for some time - and he seems on the verge of proving that. That said - who remembers Tsonga's amazing tournament last year? Just goes to show that almost anything can happen.

A couple of top 20 seeds now out on both sides of the draw - I must admit to having been pleasantly surprised to see Jelena Dokic playing well enough to get past the # 17 seed. I doubt she'll go much further - but after what she has been through it is good to see her back and playing solidly and on track to dramatically improve her ranking.

So, tennis fans, what do you have to say?...

I had Nalbandian in the quarters and Tipsarevic in the 4th round, so take these predictions as you will.

MEN
Murray over Nadal and Federer over Djokovic in the semis
Federer over Murray in the final

WOMEN
Safina over Jankovic and Serena over Venus in the semis
Serena over Safina in the final

Fernando Gonzalez is a favorite of mine, and I was encouraged by his play vs Hewitt in round 1. I'd love to see regain some form this year.

I've been totally enthralled by the Australian Open and have been watching it for hours each day. :D

For the women's draw I totally hope Elena Dementieva will take it out. A lot of people are writing her off and saying she doesn't have what it takes to win a slam but that's bollocks cause just a few months ago she won Olympic gold, and she's on a 12-match hot (and counting) winning streak at the moment, so she's pretty dangerous right now. Jelena Jankovic will probably be a future slam winner but she's got way more time than Dementieva who's 27 (nearing the 'twilight years' of tennis, although you wouldn't think so looking at her form and fitness). In that light, I'm definitely supporting Dementieva. I hope the Williams sisters both choke because a win from either of them would just be predictable and boring.

For the men's draw, I don't have a particular favourite, but I can feel it in my bones that Novak Djokovic won't successfully defend his title. It's between the other three of the 'big four', but honestly I think it would be nice if something unpredictable happened and another one of the Top 10 (ie. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Roddick, James Blake, and I guess Gilles Simon) took it out. But it will probably be Federer or Murray to take it out (ie. the predictable scenario).

I love unpredictability. I loved it when Yen-Hsun Lu took out David Nalbandian. Nobody expected it and it was a great watch.

^ Talking about 'unpredictable'...I just watched Venus (# 6) get outplayed by the 20 year old Carla Suarez Navarro (ranked in the mid 40's) - and she deserved her win. Could be that another 'star is born'. Even when Venus was ahead in the third, she never looked convincing and Carla continued to play with confidence.

The commentators (former highly ranked professional players) were likening Suarez Navarro to Henin. She was certainly hitting the ball extremely well and managed to very effectively neutralise Venus's game. It will be interesting to see how she continues in this tournament - and, more importantly, how she develops in the next 12 months. She certainly looks to have the potential of a top 10 player.

I must admit to also liking the idea of Dementieva winning - for the reasons you mention. It certainly is feasible enough - and it would be nice to see a new (and maybe slightly unexpected) face holding that trophy aloft.

I saw that match last night. Edge-of-your-seat stuff. That must be one of Venus' earliest exits from a Grand Slam for quite a while. :D I felt a little guilty that I hoped the Williams sisters would choke after Venus lost though. I feel like I jinxed her in a way. :D

Murray, even tho' against a lowly ranked player, was playing some impressive tennis last night. At one stage he did seem to have a bit of a hiccup, but it was short lived. Other than than, some of the touch & power he was displaying was decidedly the stuff of which champions are made.

I'm looking forward to some exciting matches further along the draw.

i want to see nude tennis match.

Would be so interesting the see tha balls bouncing around with the sausages flip flopping side to side and up and down.

Venus WAS my top pick on the women's side - but :help:
crashed out.

now i'm going with Serena or Dementieva

I want Nadal to win it on the men's side - i love staring at his ass :p
I'd be happy with Fed, Roddick, or Djokovic as well.

Yeah Nadal has a hot body alright. Roddick and Djokovic are both just as hot. Federer, well...I hope Marat Safin beats him tonight.

Wow. Just WOW!!!

Jelena Dokic just wiped the floor with the # 11 seed, the very talented and rapidly charging (up the rankings) Caroline Wozniacki. I have to admit that, even tho' she beat # 17, Chakvetadze in her previous match, I thought she would have no chance against Wozniacki.

As an Aussie (and, for those that don't know, the Aussies ALWAYS like to support the underdog) I have to say that it is so nice to see her come back, clear of the influence of her demented father who virtually ruined her early career, and seem like she is going from strength to strength. She is again playing like a top 10 player. If she keeps this sort of performance up - well - she will very quickly be MUCH higher than the 187 ranking with which she came into the tournament - and quite possibly back to the top 5 ranking that she once had.

WooHoo! Well done Jelena - it's great to see you back. :D

Next stop - well (probably) # 5 seed, Ivanovic. Again, I don't think she has much chance - but the way she is performing, both in terms of tennis skills and mentally as well - hey - who knows?

What I DO know is, that as a nation which is currently struggling to find any tennis heroes - she has (again) done us proud - and certainly endeared herself to the Aussie crowds.

Well - I was wrong with that one...

Ivanovic is OUT. Beaten by # 29 seed, Alisa Kleybanova of Russia.

This could get interesting...

Wow! First Venus Williams, then Caroline Wozniacki, and now Ana Ivanovic!

Too bad Marat Safin didn't do as well as he hoped against Federer (although he really fought back in that third and last set). If he'd been as consistent with his serve and stuff from the outset, who knows what could've happened. This is probably his last year and I hope he can make it count by having good results in the last three slams. Winning may be unlikely, but Marat is certainly at least Quarterfinal potential.

Jelena Dokic really enthralled me in that Wozniacki match. Her groundstrokes - wow! They absolutely flew over to Wozniacki. She was really firing some missiles! Alisa Kleybanova may have upset Ana Ivanovic but if Dokic beat the 17th seed and follow that up by beating the 11th seed she can beat the 29th seed. If she beats Kleybanova she has a spot in the Quarterfinals.

Ivanovic is a cruel JOKE for women's tennis!

He's not exactly a hot favourite to win or anything, but I'm very pleased with how Spanish 17th seed Nicolas Almagro is doing. In many attempts, he's never made it past the first round of the Aussie Open because he's more of a clay-court man. Now he's up to the third round, so good for him.

Yes - and Kleybanova deserved her win. Ivanovic certainly wasn't playing well and the Russian girl just sort of monstered her out of that last set.

It could be an interesting match. Dokic has really impressed me with her concentration and focus - and her belief in herself is growing at each round. She made some interesting comments in post match interviews. She isn't setting her sights too high - she she is still talking about going out, playing the best she can and just looking to get back to the top 50 by next year. Mentally she seems even stronger now (and she always was focused, early in her career). She seems to be able to shrug off poor shots, bad calls - and just get on with the next point.

The next match should be entertaining - neither of them have anything to lose. Kleybanova has a lot of power - but so did Wozniacki and Jelena was pushing her all over the court in the second half of that match.

I think it is interesting that Dokic is coming in as a lowly ranked player, but unlike most of the young 'up & comers' she has the calmness and mental toughness of old...and in her past couple of matches she has been able to use the first half of the match to dissect her opponents game, work out what the weaknesses are and how she can exploit them - then with almost clinical precision go about doing just that - and leaving them floundering. That is the sort of ability you normally only see in top flight players. If she can work on getting her fitness to a peak (her consistency and precision in her shotmaking should only improve with more matchplay) then I would hold out high hopes that she could easily surpass her own expections for 12 months from now. She even said herself that she feels she is only at 50-60% at the moment.

I shall watch her continue her comeback with a LOT of interest.

I must admit that he has pretty much escaped my notice - but he is now up against Monfils - who is also an exciting player with a good deal of potential. like Murray he seems to have 'bulked up' over the last year (I imagine Roger Rasheed has had a hand in that) and is playing with more power. Both Tsonga and Monfils (if they can stay clear of injury) could have a big future.
