Avatar - Possible Best Picture nominee

Well I love Sci-fi, and the fact that it's James Cameron again means I will be seeing it.

I saw the trailer during commercial too and I thought it was a new show or something. :rotflmao: It looks amazing though, will definitely be seeing it.

Why not he won with his craptacular "Titanic", so anything is possible.
It kind of embarrasses me to admit that I cried the first time I saw Titanic, cause everyone else thinks it sucked.

I don't find it one of my favorite movies today, but I thought it was decent.

(!)

Golden Globe nomination today for Best Picture.

Oscars here we come (!)

When a trailer can win Best Picture you know the movie is something special.

so .. I just saw it :)

The characters .. well laaaame. They are not even two-dimensional.
The story .. it's okay .. it's the native americans all over again .. but with a nice final-fantasy kind of touch
the visual .. woah baby .. I only saw "my bloody valentine" in 3d before .. and that movie looks like crap (besides being totally crappy) compared to avatar. even the real life scenes were very well done ( i wanted to grab into Jake's chest hair :D).
in close combat the narvi looked a bit wooden .. but that was about it. beautiful.

Hey! Nobody diss Titanic. It's cheese but it's more like an aged cheddar than it is processed.

But yes, I won't see Avatar unless it wins Best Picture. Which means I won't see Avatar.

I think hype will kill this film for everyone who listens to said hype.

Firstly, the Globes are irrelevant. 86 non-Americans deciding the best films of the year? Come on!

Secondly, I think people are being bowled over by the effects and how revolutionary it is, but is anyone raving about the story? or the acting? or the screenplay? No, hence why it shouldn't get a Best Picture nomination.

So far the movie gives me the impression of being about a planet full of native smurfs.
For the updated record of my opinion in this thread, I absolutely loved this movie. Drive to the nearest IMAX 3D theater and see this as soon as you can. If there is just one movie that you would be willing to go and pay money for to experience this year, this would be the one. The key word is "experience." View the countless video reviews on Youtube if you need to decide more, they are all extremely positive. Anyway, I have raved about this on other threads, but honestly I think this deserves to be recommended as often as I get the chance.

Actually, people are raving about many aspects of this movie. Even those that have only seen the 2D version. Just go to YouTube and see for yourself what real ordinary people are saying. Many of them had low expectations as I did.

The story is good. Part of the story is the visual experience. You can't just take away the visual experience and judge the story without it. That would be like taking away all the jokes from a comedy and trying to judge the story in that.

The acting is also impressive. The motion capture characters have real emotions; that can't be achieved without good actors, even if its just a voice actor, behind those characters. This motion capture puts the characters in Robert Zemeckis movies to shame.

The screenplay, while basic, works well in this movie. No the script probably isn't award worthy. But still, it doesn't in the slightest detract from the movie.

Do I think this should win best picture award? I wouldn't compain if it did. But knowing how the academy works, it probaby won't. Definitely it deserves a nomination.

Sam Worthington's Australian, James Cameron's Canadian. Ever since Nicole Kidman arrived everyone in Hollywood is foreign, while American starlets are too busy giving hand jobs at Le Deux.

I'm not really defending the FP. There's a lot of category fraud and payolas going on. But to say the the FP have no say in an industry run by foreigners is...yeah.

This movie HAS to at least get a nomination with the field expanding to 10 this year.

And I agree with this, the movie was awesome on all levels. Critics were wrong about the story sucking imo.

The movie was good but not worth seeing again.....It certainly is not on the Level of "Lord of the Rings" or "Star Wars"...

The Brilliant Director/Producer James Cameron did not have to put the actors through all that work for 2-plus yrs when he could have stuck to the basic computer animation..The average movie-goer will not see a difference in "Avatar's" animated characters VS the animated characters in "Shrek"...

Using an unknown "B-Actor" to sell this Monster-production was not wise on James part. He pulled out all the stops for "Titanic" and it worked like a charm.. James better Hope & Pray Sci-Fi Lovers across the country will flock to the theatre over the Winter-Break..

$500-Million price-tag...$72 million it's first weekend...It will do good to break $200-Million in the States...Shirlock Holmes is opening in 4 days and Robert is a Force at the box-office these days...

personally i loved it. it was visually stunning, and i was sold just based off of that. it's loaded with quite a few clichés plot wise, but other than that it's a pleasing story. i liked the messages they presented about war, spirituality, and environmentalism but i think a lot of people would see those messages as incredibly one sided.
all in all the strengths were in the visual elements. the story was good in my book, but could have been written a bit better. i'd watch it again
