So, lately I've been thinking of replacing my current anti-virus program, Norton Internet Security 2006, with something else since I've been having problems with it (definitions not properly installing, windows not opening correctly in it and missing some things when it scans).
I was thinking of using AVG Anti Virus and just wondered how good is it. I know there's two versions, free and paid, and wanted to know, how good is the free version? Is it okay to use for about 4 or 5 months, until I can replace the pc I'm using now? Or should I just subscribe, I notice it's pretty cheap, and if I do can I install it and transfer the subscription to a new pc?

I use ClamWin. It does a good job and it is free. The only downfall is it doesn't automatically scan files you download, you have to do that manually.

Thanks for bringing ClamWin up, I was going to ask if that was any good also, but forgot all about it.

I have friends who are happy with AVG. My experience of Norton is that it is worse than having a virus. I removed it and made do with regular scans with adaware and the like.

I have AVG Free as well. It works pretty well for me. It doesn't slow my computer down, unless it's scanning.

AVG Free is the best anti-virus program I've ever used. If you can pony up the cash for the full version, so much the better.

I'm adding my voice to the above chorus singing AVG's praise. :D

I use AVG free and am 100% happy with it.

I'd go without an AV before I'd ever put Norton on another computer. Seriously.

Trawler69 is spot on, IMO. Worse than a virus.

I totaly agree, Norton is a resource hog and when I ran it I had more problems with things not loading correctly, slow opening and running programs. I have AVG(free version) on my moms computer and my laptop. I don't do much surfing or e-mail on the laptop and neither does my mom, but AVG seems to handle everything well. As Trawler69 says, also run ad aware, spybot or the like and you should be fine.

I agree re AVG.

I have only ever used the free version (along with periodic checks with Spybot or Lavasoft AdAware, plus spywareblaster) - and have had no problems. It updates automatically, scans at whatever time you set up - hassle free.

Yep, AVG is the best free one out there, beats most commercial ones too.

Norton is an HOG... But I will give kudos to Symantec Corp Anti-Virus

I went ahead and got a copy of the Pro version and so far like it. Much easier to configure than Norton in my opinion. The only downside is that it takes longer to scan, although thats probably because it had been some time since I defragged before I started the scan !oops!, but I can just set it up to do that while I sleep.

Uhmm... I maybe the only one that hates AVG with a passion... My computer crashed when I installed it (the free version). I use NOD-32 by eset. Very good. I've scanned my computer and had no viruses, anything at all.

Just my $0.02...

It"s like anything else with computers, what works well for some won't work for others. You have to experiment and find what works best for you system. My comments about Norton concern how it worked for me and a couple of other people that I know, that dosen't mean it won't be great for you and your system.
