Awful Estate Agents

If you get a market as rotten as the English real-estate market, don't expect people to play by the rules.

You say that like it's my fault I need some place to live in the UK.

There are rules and then there is just right out bad management.

The over-inflation of the housing market has allowed many less than competent/less than bona fide Estate Agents to thrive, that would otherwise not be able to compete with their more competent competitors.

All I can say is WOW. . .
I'm a Real Estate Broker in NY. If I had a fraction of those complaints logged on me not only would I be fined thousands of dollars but I would most likely be facing jail time.

Seems to me that they should be tightening the rules a bit in the UK.

Apparently they manage (or own) properties for rental rather than sale? In which case, excuse me, we have plenty in the US that are just as bad.

One time it took me 6 months to get my deposit back from an agent who wouldn't return my calls. And then it only happened because I called the owner, who was a prominent real estate agent.

Same problem for getting repairs done. A lot of landlords treat their tenants like shit.

next time dont sign anything without an attorney looking at it, and don't let anyone pressure you to sign anything. not blaming you, but this is a contract and you need to watch out for yourself....

trouble is a lot of folk in the UK would rather post something on a blog or write a nasty review online than actually complain at the time or take action any further. Apathy is a very dangerous thing.

I wasn't pressured into signing anything.
It's just one thing after another with them and their incompetence/neglect/disregard for the contract.

The ombudsman has been informed don't you worry. :)
