I have XPhome and have decided I HAVE to back up my files. Last week I had a scare, thot I had a virus. This week I've tried to backup folders of images and music. EVERY one of my folders are marked read only and when I try to uncheck that box it goes back to read only. XP help does not have any mention of read only that I can find. Oh, yeah, I have tried to put them on CD but error msg says I'm not authorized to do it. Is it something to do with Administrator? I have 2 pcs and cannot put them on a network so each PC is alone, not network. This is so frustrating. I am able to move my files to another HD so I can backup but I want them on a CD.](*,) ](*,)

The read only marker on a folder in XP is natural - it's usually only a partial tick (slightly greyed out) but not having permission to copy your own files is weird. What part of the process are you not authorized to do? Copy/Move files or burn CDs?

Use a bootable OS on a CD like BartPE or Knoppix to access your data.

If you have access to an external USB hard drive you can use BartPE to copy the files from your internal to your external.

Ok thanks, I downloaded the BartPE last week for that virus I thot I had. Lucky me!
The read only is not greyed out it is BLACK. I wasn't able to burn to CD. It's odd that I can move the files tho. I have the music in separate folders as to singer. It let me burn the folders but the folders were empty on the CD after the burn. One burn I did thru Win Med Player 11. It pulled all the tunes from the folders and then only burned partially some of the tunes. Not the whole contents. I think that's all. I have not have had a problem burning folders for a long time.

/\ knoppix will allow you to remove the "read only" on the folders. I had to use it to do the same thing to some of my folders after i added a password to my user account. you can change the "read only" option similarly to how you would in windows if i recall correctly.

i dont know if you answered this or not, but do you have administrator status on your pc? or are you logged in with a restricted account, because that could definately cause issues with burning and files being read only (if you dont have permission to edit them).

I checked and I'm set up as administator. but anyway I got all my files backed up to my 2nd HD so I'm ok now. Now to try all the suggestions. I didn't have anything to do this w/e. Thanks

Noelie and TRexx I got all my files to my 2nd HD so I'm backed up. I went ahead and did that in case Noelie is right about my HD fixin to go out.
But I'm still gonna try the BartPE and knoppix to see how they work.
I even tried to burn again on cd and the darn thing won't even send the files to the CD Drive today. Yesterday it did.
I have Nero and tried that but Nero won't burn mp3 and jpg together in folders. It brings all the mp3s out of the folders and the jpgs separately. I don't llike that.
I do remember yesterday when I got the files to CD Drive I highlited the files and clicked on file/burnCD and that is the one that copied the folder and nothing in it.
and again if you don't highlight it you get a different file/burnCd and that's the one that brought up media player 11 and it segregated my mp3s. some copied and some didn't. Today the files won't even go to the CD Drive. Bah!!
I'm gonna install media player 10 and see if that works.
I know how to burn a CD using XP and this is NOT how it was done before.
gonna try that DeepBurner1 Noelie suggested.
Thanks guys, now I'm playing. Gonna figure it out if it kills me!!!
(*8*) ](*,) ..| :grrr:  :p

well I don't know WTF!!
this HD is gonna get formatted pretty quick
I figured if the burn I did yesterday only burned the empty folders it shouldn't take up much room. Instead of throwing it away I tried to burn ovver it and there is no room
Today my PC is reading the CD and what I burned is in the folders!!!!!
But Noelie that deepburner is exactly what I've been looking for for my music mixes. thanks
back to playing
thanks guys

Hey fuckbait69 I think almost every CD burning app will want to sort your files for you. I take it you want to play the CD in a DVD player to use on a TV or something like that?

Anyway - your best option is to gather all the mp3 files you want to burn into one folder and all your jpg files into another folder (maybe call them mp3 and jpg?) and burn the folders onto the CD. Most CD/DVD players can read a few folders deep anyway.

Ive come to that conclusion. That is what I want to end up when I mix the tunes. It was just this time I wanted a back up as I had them sorted by artists. I guess I'll just leave them on that second HD and work on them from there. That DeepBurner does exactly what I want to do. Except keep them by artist. oh well. I've dumped media player 11 and gone back to 9 it works better for me.
Thanks for all your help. I'm keeping that screwed up HD to practice on the BartPE.(!) (*8*)

Thanks TRexx will try it.
I realized overnight that I have a 1g memory stick for my camera that I can put folders of images in. I thot to try music just to see if it will take it.
I love experimenting.

Should have added.. My cam has 32m memory to begin with. I bot the 1g with visions of freelance photog. Just curious if I can use it as maybe a temp to move to other pcs. It's a really simiple procedure to put stuff on the stick. Just a drag and drop. Just curious. Probably procastrinating from fixing that screwed up HD. I hate the process of reinstalling everything after a format.
