Bad news about reopening schools: Summer camp took almost all precautions and still 76% of the kids attending got infected

Schools and kids have always been viral vectors since schools began. It's no revelation. The only people saying otherwise are doing so for political gains.

But, I'm not even mad.

Trump's blunders here at the end are the icing on the cake. Just like Randall Flagg in The Stand, he's raging and ranting and dragging down those toadies around him who have been morally bankrupt enough to hitch their wagons to his star. His fall will be spectacular, regardless of the actual margin. He's already begun to set the stage for a contested election, but his support in DC has already seen the handwriting on the wall. They know he is out and even when he loses and tries to block the election, he'll get the boot from him because they've had it. He's botched foreign relations, stuck the GOP with the stigma of having worsened the pandemic, criticized every worthy citizen from dead presidents and senators to loyal state department staff and Pentagon brass, and he's repeatedly touted fools and knaves even worse than himself.

He's been a boat anchor for the erstwhile ascendant GOP and he'll feel their boot on his backside as he kicks and screams on his way out. They never liked him, so it will be good riddance to bad rubbish.

And they realize that if he isn't put down immediately when he rejects the election, that we will have national riots that will make the Black Lives Matter uprising looks like a Pride Parade. Civil war will be a certainty, even if brief.

In short. This summer camp took almost every precaution by the state guidelines and still 76% of the kids tested positive at the end of the summer camp.

Reopening schools will be a disaster.

Edit.

Mommy forker. Can a mod please move this thread to current event?

They didn't take almost every precaution.

Kids were not required to wear masks.

Just wait till they see Nanas for the first time after being at camp and give her a big 'ole hug.

^ reopening the schools. Kids get infected. They infect their parents. Parents infect gradmas and grandpas. This will be a disaster.

I keep wondering how many school children will be orphans before the holidays.

Been lurking on right wing websites. Those morons are saying that it is no biggie because only one kid got sick. Um, it is one kid started getting sick 2 days after leaving camp. As we know, for most people it takes several weeks for the symptoms to manifest themselves. During this time of no symptoms, they are still infectious. What about all the parents and grandparents they will be infecting? All the uncles, aunts, cousins, and the cousins' parents and grandparents?

Rightwingers are morons.

Edit.

And it is not just the death counts that matter. A lot of people who recovered from this have permanent lung damage. There are 20-30 year olds who have recovered from this with lungs that look like they've been smoking for 40 years.

I can't imagine being a Parent and actually weighing the idea of sending your kid to school or not, it should honestly be a no brainer. Unfortunately this is the World we live in.

The headline is very misleading. As has been pointed out, they didn't follow most of the precautionary guidelines, most significantly, that of wearing masks. This was extremely irresponsible of the camp, as is the headline.

It's gonna be a helluva bad fall around here. My local schools are doing an 'every other day and alternate Friday' model. It's gonna be terrible, and I expect the whole thing to be scuttled by sometime in October.

The anti-mask crowd ('It violates my rights;' 'I have a medical condition;' 'The whole thing is fake;' blah blah blah) is running around blissfully unaware they're spreading the virus and it is getting worse every day as folks are becoming 'fatigued' with the whole thing.

My State issued a mandatory mask order (finally, Jared!) a couple of weeks ago and the numbers, while not out of control, are slowly but surely creeping up.

I work in a large retail environment. We have several large signs up, every single employee wears a mask AND gloves all day long. We offer free masks if customers don't have one. We generally limit customers to less than 50% capacity, and this time of year it isn't a problem. At least once a day, someone comes in without a mask and refuses to wear one.

How do we know that person isn't the 1 in 500 infectious persons in the state RIGHT NOW? We certainly can't tell, and neither can the asymptomatic customer.

And IF you truly cannot wear a mask because of some sort of medical condition, I get it, and I'm sorry you're not well, but why in the heck are you out and about putting yourself at risk? If you have COPD this thing has a pretty high fatality rate.

I'm the guy who has to respond to other customers and my employee's complaints that someone isn't wearing a mask. Daily I have to politely, yet firmly, offer a complimentary mask, and daily someone yells at me that I'm violating their rights. Do they think I enjoy getting screamed at every day? I'm just trying to protect my staff as best as possible from catching this thing and taking it home to their families. I'm really not looking forward to November.

Thank you very much. Rant over. I feel a little better.

Here our schools return after the summer break, personally i give it about ten days before we have to close them again.

As Jason has posted kids really are vectors when it comes to passing on a virus.

Vice President Pence and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos visited a school system in North Carolina last week where they praised its educators for reopening in-person classes amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A week later, a school in the reopened system has had to ask teachers and students to quarantine after a fourth-grader tested positive for COVID-19.

Get ready to see this happen again and again over the next months.

Trump and the Republican party should get most of the blame for stoking the crowd that think covid-19 is a hoax.

Terrified of losing the senior vote, Trump indicated yesterday that in the states where the virus is widespread, older teachers who are at the most vulnerable risk for COVID-19 could stay home until things are under control but I guess damn everyone else, kids and adults up to 60 HAVE to return. Talk about selfish and short sighted.

One thing you have to remember is that schools are big business. So far, a primary reason that COVID is out of control is that decisions have been made that put what's good for business ahead of science. There are many millions of kids attending schools in the US, and there is big money keeping the schools open. From designing and building new schools, to the suppliers of computers, textbooks, pencils, pens, and erasers, to cafeteria food, subcontractors; and of course, the teachers, administrators, and staff, that is a huge commitment of money. And don't forget about the related activities, such as back-to-school sales, where retailers sell all the clothes, shoes, and supplies to the parents of the kids. With the possible exception of the need for computers for virtual learning, none of these people are making money if all the kids are sitting at home to avoid COVID. But the one thing these people are forgetting (perhaps to some degree willingly) is that COVID has walked through every door that we have left open, and making kids return to school is a big one. The politicians and bureaucrats are all too willing to bet that somehow, despite all previous experience, that coronavirus is going to ignore the school door which has been left wide open.

Just saw on the news this morning about how when it comes to kids having COVID-19 there are still a lot of unknowns and children that had it are still carrying the symptoms.

This is going to get bad but people are in such a rush to get back to normalcy that any kind of rational thinking goes out the window. Capitalism is King in America and it matters more than human life, even if it is children.
