No wonder Missouri is ranked as one of the worst states in education....

Frankly I think all message clothing out to be banned from the classroom.

Amen from the choir. I'm in favor of school uniforms.

This is such a silly thing for those parents to complain about. Evolution is often taught in schools, atheists and Christians and every other group possible are types of student clubs. They all have club t-shirts too. If they want their children kept in a bubble, send them to private school or home school them. I'm sure there would be complaints if a picture of Jesus was on the t-shirt as well. Same if it was the Star of David or Buddha too. Some folks will bitch about anything! The principal shouldn't have backed down.

I would have all student naked, so there would be no more malicious surprises in our classrooms. As to the talk and discussion, let it be complete and straight forward. Evolution is the only scientific theory that needs to be discussed in any science classroom.

The funny thing is that it had nothing to with evolution or creationism.

If you look at the picture it just shows the 'evolution' of the tramboine, a musical instrument.

Not to me. The first image looks like a monkey evolving into a man. I'm no artist, but from reading the article, the Band Director seems to admit it.

If I try very hard, I can see their side. Separation of church and state goes both ways. The Band Director couldn't lead his students in prayer at school, so he shouldn't promote evolution either. This might seem as though the school promotes evolution and doesn't support creationism. It's the school band, not an interest oriented organization that was created and lead by students like the Christian Leaders of America, the young Atheists, the GSA, whatever. Since the parents are paying for the shirts and the children in the band must wear this particular shirt, it probably added some fuel to the fire. I'm sure someone would complain if the shirt depicted creationism or the rising of Christ.

It's odd though b/c most Christians believe in evolution to some degree, but that GOD had a hand in it. I guess these parents must think evolution=atheism and creationism=Christian (I'm guessing. Who knows what brought the complaint. Could've been a non-religious person or could've involved any religion not nec Christianity). Sometimes a shirt is just a shirt!

Interestingly, judging from the article, the students didn't seem to care. And, many Christian parents think the complaints were ridiculous too. Really, the principal should've stood her ground.

It's the instrument the monkey and man are holding showing how it's changed over the years.

It's the context of it's meaning.

I severely doubt the band director just put the picture of the evolutionary process on a band t-shirt just because.

It was a metaphor to how the instrument had evolved and changed since it's inception.

Yes, both man and the instrument are evolving on the t-shirt. He chose evolution b/c it was easily recognizable. From the article, it's their theme this year--Brass Evolutions 2009. If there wasn't a monkey to man involved, I don't think anyone would complain about the evolution issue. Instead, the color of the shirts would have them riled up. There's always something. ;)

Some parents raised hell over our GSA t-shirts. The parents alleged that our shirts promoted sexual activity and alternative lifestyles among young teens. The shirts were red, had the GSA symbol, and stated, "Many Different Minds, Many Different People, Many Different Beliefs, All w/ One Goal. EQUALITY!" We were pro-sex, that Missouri Band Director is anti-Christ. You know how it is.

"Pollitt said the district is required by law to remain neutral where religion is concerned."

Evolution is science, not religion.

“I was disappointed with the image on the shirt.” Melby said. “I don’t think evolution should be associated with our school.”

I don't think it will be. Intelligence either. #-o

It's nice to know so much of the United States still exists in the 19th century. ](*,)

Note that is "Separation of Church and State" not "Separation of Science and State." The band teacher should be [STRIKE]promoting[/STRIKE] explaining evolution because he is a teacher at a school where people learn things like science, how to play an instrument, math, etc. The school should [STRIKE]promote[/STRIKE] teach evolution and it should have no time for any opinion one way or another on creationism, or voodoo, or feng shui, or transubstantiation.

Hey, it was the best I could do.

Evolution is fact. Not religion.

The shirt was clever.

Missouri.

So depressing. Apparently natural selection isn't enough to keep Americans from getting stupider every year...

Band parent Sherry Melby, who is a teacher in the district, stands behind Pollitt’s decision. Melby said she associated the image on the T-shirt with Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

“I was disappointed with the image on the shirt.” Melby said. “I don’t think evolution should be associated with our school.”

I don't think Mrs Melby should be associated with ANY school. She clearly has a problem with the concept of reality based teaching.
