Check your checking account. They will now be charging you $9 a month if you do not have direct deposit or keep a balance of $1000 in the account. They are also $30 Billion in the debt.

I think they should have let them go backrupt so we can come up with something new and better.

Checked.
Haven't charged me at all.
Bank with someone else - I always found US Bank a better choice among the big banks. Well Fargo is about the same as Bank of America - except I think their limits aren't as high on a basic checking account.
Most of your local banks offer free checking these days to be competetive so it may be worth checking into them to see if they have any balance minimums. It's all FDIC insured so no worries.
For the OP -- go in to your branch and ask them to REMOVE the fees...
ODDS are that they will...
BEST OF LUCK!!!

// I would be surprised if the branch will remove those fees. I use Chase and they fee people up the ying. I complained to the branch manager and he just shrugged his shoulders, like there is nothing I can do.
Most of these banks are in such bad shape they are grasping at straws to stay above water.
At Chase if you oversdraw your account the move money in $50.00 incriments, charge you $10 to move the money (from your own savings account mind you, so you are not even borrowing money from them) and then they charge you interest on the entire thing, even the ten dollar moving fee.
I think the thing to do is find a small local bank, if there are any left, and bank with them. It's more personal service.
The fees start next month. I closed the checking account. I will soon close the savings account. I can't even get an ATM card for the savings account only. I think I am going with Wachovia they are less than 2 miles from me.
You have no right to complain about abusive banking practices unless you have been a client of Spanish banks and thrifts: where do you think the "Spanish exception" (as false as any other myth, by the way) and the purchase power of the Banco Santander come from?

The bank's explanation was pretty lame - something about that it costs them maintenance time.
