Folks, I have started banning people from CE&P until after the election. A forum ban means that you are banned from a forum, not the entire board. Anytime someone gets a forum ban I will alert the other moderators and admins so that they can ensure that the same disruptive behavior doesn't spill over into another forum. Do that and you can get permanently banned from the board.

My patience with the rise of personal attacks is quite short.

If you cannot mind your manners then count on being booted from CE&P until after the election.

Is there any way we can know who is temp banned? It doesn't show up like the permanent 'Banned' descrip. under someone's user ID does, correct?

To my knowledge, there is no evidence online when a member is forum banned. And I'm certainly not going to draw attention to anyone receiving a forum ban.

During a forum ban the member is free to use the other forums and post as he or she likes. I do alert other moderators in case the subject of the forum ban decides to take their mischief to other forums.

My philosophy is to use the forum ban sparingly. It will be temporary and the member will be welcomed back once the forum ban time has expired. We all have to give everyone a second chance.

I would expect that everyone would use that second chance to make some adjustments to their posting, by avoiding the temptation to go too personal and attacking someone.

And to be clear, calling someone an idiot, or some similar trash-talk, may get you a warning, but it will take more than that to get a forum ban. It has to be a serious offense and the poster has to demonstrate a flagrant disregard of the Code of Conduct or display some evidence of hate.

But, sadly, with the election drawing near, rhetoric on both sides has escalated. And some people can handle that better than others. We've seen an escalation in nastiness in CE&P. And some of that nastiness has been in the form of some very bitter atatcks, and I'm just not going to have that. This is a forum for respectful debate and not one for personal mocks.

Directing comments toward the topic can never get you in trouble. When you veer off by directing your comments toward a person who posts here you run the risk of becoming too personal, and your comfort level may fool you into thinking that attacks are ok here. They are not.

I hope you keep up this policy even after the election. I mostly avoid this forum because of all the strictly personal attacks and escalated rhetoric.

I'm very interested in political issues, but when 3 or 5 people use this forum for their own ongoing pissing contest, it's just too tiresome. They can do that via PM if it's important to them.

And I don't agree that calling somebody an idiot is acceptable. Name calling in any form conveys no useful information to the rest of us. People only resort to personal attacks when they can't think of a more intelligent comeback, right?

Maybe there's some small chance that this forum can be reclaimed for all JUB members, not just a handful of ill-mannered regulars.

I will continue to use the forum ban after the election.

While I don't want this to be used for minor violations, it does provide for a good remedy for some situations - particularly when someone needs a "time out."

Congrats Snaps

the CE&P forum is becoming a great place again

thanks for all of your hard work here on forum banns and with the new set of simple and direct rules!!!

BRAVO !! :=D: :=D: :=D: :=D:

I hate to invoke funny word coincidences, but you said 'small chance'. Perhaps 'Chance', the user w/the same name, is one of the ill-mannered regulars you cite, slobone?

He invoked a moratorium on personal attacks, and then proceeded to be the first to violate his own rule. What do the rest of y'all think? Did you manage to catch that thread where he did that?

^ He's now calling we poster "Ladies."

I have to assume this is who the other posters are speaking of when they express their digust...

I'd hope so. I would hope there isn't a tendency on the right-leaning posters to overlook the un'moratorium' like conduct by those closer to their own political persuasion (and I, for one, do feel that those who actually *propose* the moratorium should be held to a higher standard). But aside from those w/the proposals, I'd say others should be weary of having double standards, especially when some of them like to cite 'paranoia' by others.

There once was a rather large crowd

Who spoke exceedingly loud-
Though base argument takes two,
They screached: "No! It's all YOU!"
And themselves stayed overly proud.

Please do read the thread

Please do

I've always felt that is was quite obnoxious when people use poetry to make their 'point'. For some reason, I've been reminded of that, lately...

Classy guys make sensible points no matter the technique used.Thanks,Maltese.

If you hold thoughtful posts to be dear-
You'll often be let down in here.
But I'm thankful for all!
(For when it's so small -
The retort makes the point rather clear!)

That was completely unintentional. My apologies to Chance1 if it could be interpreted otherwise.

I'm not going to get into which people are the worst offenders -- that's up to the mods to decide. Of course, anyone here is welcome to check the size of their footwear...

A brief spell in the naughty-corner courtesy of JD and Seth is more than enough to make the most ardent of members straighten up and fly right.

If you can coincide your banning with your foreign holiday, even better.

I love Chance. He's one of the best in CE&P. He's always polite and makes his points concisely and clearly. Chance rocks!!

^^ Name names people!
