Barbara Bush Dead at 92

Don't know much about her, but my dad, a Republican, often commented that she was the first Republican to bring AIDS Awareness to her party.

I am not sorry she is gone. I won't be sorry when he is gone either.

I blame them for the deaths of my friends....she was no friend to LGBT people and her record on AIDS...blech.

They made a point to show the real victims were children and the dirty faggots deserved it...make no mistake....

I don't know if it is true but it was said at the time when someone brought it to her husbands attention how many gay people were dying..his response was "So..whats the problem?" A quick assessment of who he is led me to believe it though I have no way of knowing really.

First Lady factoid:

She was at death the fifth-oldest lived First Lady of the United States.

This isn't Nancy or Ronald Reagan, for fucks sake, who actually did ignore the AIDS crisis...some people getting so pissy and nasty and defaming her, fuck that shit. A damn ballsy, larger than life woman who was genuine and stronger than most men could dare be. A life well lived and RIP to Barbara Bush.

Ahhh...kinda like what you do to Hillary Clinton? ...but I guess your criticisms are so "above it all"...eh?

When the news alert of the passing of Barbara Bush hit my phone on Tuesday, my mind immediately went back to a 1989 photo of her cradling a baby. A grandmother holding an infant isn’t shocking. But when the grandmother was the new first lady and the child was suffering from AIDS, the photo spoke volumes.

Not two months before Bush’s visit to an AIDS hospice in Washington, her husband, President George H.W. Bush, was inaugurated to succeed Ronald Reagan. The revered and loquacious Reagan was mute on the epidemic laying waste to gay men, African Americans and other vulnerable populations. Barbara Bush broke that shameful silence with a hug and her voice.

It's sad when anyone's mother dies, but let's not canonize her just yet, she had some good points, and she had some bad ones. Condolences to her family, but I will not be weeping.

What anoyed me about her she was pro choice and not homophobic at all but never said a fucking word! Its just like some fucking closet cas being a Log Cabin Republican. By the way for the 20th year gays can not got to the annual Republican meeting yet the idiot keep calling them selves "Repubpigs"

What annoyed me was the "Compassionate Conservative" crap she spouted..so now when they are actively and openly discriminating against me..they can be phony and pretend they are "compassionate". Holding an AIDS baby "proved it"

...and that led the way for my personal favorite..."Love the sinner..hate the sin"...

Like how many straight people do they say that too.

...and she spawned GW and Jeb...even though trump makes them both look good...not good enough.

Sorry...like Nancy before her...I have nothing good to say about her. I have no problem if other people do though...

You guys beat me to it. Any disparagement or ignorance of the HIV epidemic from the Bushes was merely brought forward; by then it was a Republican litmus test, and a de facto requirement in their party, that anybody running for office MUST be anti-gay. Their party platform SCREAMED that - even as recently as 2016!

Reagan went something like seven years without even uttering a word about HIV/AIDS (though, to be fair, part of the first year might not count, because it took a while into 1981, I think, for anybody to know what was going on). OK, more than six years. Is THAT good enough? By 1988 it was obvious that the anti-gay message was wonderful for pumping up their base.

It's interesting that his son, a few election cycles later, didn't really seem to make anti-gay into a major issue, though he was such an awful president in so many ways. On the other hand, he certainly was not pro-active in trying to roll the bigotry back, and in 2004 the RNC made it a big enough issue that, in states like Ohio, all they had to do was to run candidacies on anti-gay hatred, and have the Republican DIEBOLD CORP supply the untraceable paperless voting machines with secret software. Furthermore, I understand they had the voting further tabulated by some hack contractor in eastern Tennessee. Kerry, who got a REAL Purple Heart medal, was made out to be something worse than a draft dodger, while the deserter-in-chief had four more years/. Oh, in 2004, it was like if GAY MARRIAGE ever caught on, it would be the absolute and utter collapse of all human society, and the ability to keep the species going.

So, I fault Reagan much more than GHW Bush who was doing little more than carry on the well-established practices and legacy of "his" party. For that matter, when taken as a whole, I consider GHW Bush to have been the best Republican president since Eisenhower, and at least as good as, say, Kennedy.

It's sad that we fall all over ourselves to applaud people who did the absolute minimum to appear decent. I don't think that the Bush family is full of raging homophobes, but they were certainly willing to let the raging homophobes have their way - in the end, what is the difference?

That's why Bush fought so hard to keep Canada from passing the Civil Marriage Act in 2005. It was passed and, wonder of wonders, we're still here.

Her and her family devastated the world's economy and helped ensure lasting instability in the middle east only to line their pockets. Profiting from war is where we draw the line on softening someone's sins just because they're advantaged. We already let them put slave-owners on our currency, how much evil are we supposed to ignore?
