Battlestar Galactica, Season 4

So I've figured out how to fill the void for the next 10-12 months until the next season begins. I'm going to rent and watch all the Babylon 5 episodes seasons 1 through 5 and the legend of the rangers TV movie. With six discs for each episode that should fill me sci fi need for a little while anyway.

If you've not done so I'd like to recommend Blockbuster.com, you can put all the discs in your queue and once your done with a disc just mail it back and you'll always have a steady stream of DVD's coming in. Or you can take them to the store and swap for an instore rental.

NW, have you never seen Babylon 5? If you haven't, you're in for a treat. In my opinion it's the best SciFi series ever made. Revolutionary, especially considering it first aired in 1992. It was the first TV show to use all CGI graphics for the space scenes, and while they're not great by today's standards, they beat everything else in their day.

It's important to note you shouldn't start with the first episode, there's a pilot movie you need to see first. There are actually 6 box sets, seasons 1-5 and the movie set (there were 5 movies, excluding legend of the rangers). If you've never seen the show before, here's the order you should watch things in:

Pilot Movie 1 - "The Gathering" - Movie Set, Disc 1
Season 1 - "Signs and Portents"
Season 2 - "The Coming of Shadows"
Season 3 - "Point of No Return"
Season 4 - "No Surrender, No Retreat"
Movie 2 - "In the Beginning" - Movie Set, Disc 2
Movie 3 - "Thirdspace" - Movie Set, Disc 3
Season 5 - "The Wheel of Fire"
Movie 4 - "River of Souls" - Movie Set, Disc 4
Movie 5 - "A Call to Arms" - Movie Set, Disc 5
Spinoff Series - "Crusade" - (only 13 episodes made)
Movie 6 - "To Live and Die in Starlight (Legend of the Rangers)" - Single DVD Release

I don't know your finances, but you can pick up (from amazon.com):
Babylon 5 - The Complete Television Series (5 box sets) for $220.99,
Babylon 5 - The Movie Collection for $47.99,
Babylon 5 - The Legend of the Rangers for $14.99,
and Crusade - The Complete Series for $47.99.
That's all of Babylon 5, every episode, movie, and spinoff, for $331.96 (free shipping), not a bad price if you have the cash.

But most importantly, if you haven't seen babylon 5 before, DON'T WATCH IT OUT OF ORDER!!! You'll ruin the experience! Watch it in the order above if it's your first time :). And don't get discouraged by the first season, while there are some great episodes in that season, it is kind of a slow start to the show, but things REALLY pick up in season 2, in a big way.

P.S.
And don't forget, later this year marks the return of new Babylon 5 material with Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, 2 Direct-to-DVD short movies coming this fall.

Thanks for the info on B5. I did watch most of it when it was on TV, but its been a while so it will all seem new again. I love seeing the actress from B5 on LOST, an actor's got to work I suppose.

Don't you just love the show. I HATE the new time slot on Sunday night! I'm on west coast time so it's not on until 10:00 PM. I have to get up early every Monday morning for work. Since I'm doing my part and watching it live.

me too, i've not seen it since it moved to sundays. :grrr:

No problem ;). I haven't really gotten into LOST, at least not yet, i have a feeling it's going to be one of those things where one day i'll go out and buy all the DVDs and catch up just in time for the last season or something, heh.

The B5 DVDs are good, the menu animations are, well... they're crappy, but Warner Bro's didn't give them a big budget to make the DVDs. But all the footage is great, and in 16:9 widescreen format on the DVDs, instead of the standard 4:3 format it originally aired in, so you get a better visual experience this time around.

The DVDs have some nice extras and a few commentaries, as well as some easter eggs (gag reels (bloopers) for most seasons). They're a must have if you have a big SciFi DVD collection ;), and the money to burn of course... But worth it in my opinion. I'm sure you can find them on eBay for less than even amazon has them, but be sure you're not getting Asian bootleg black market copies if you use eBay!

So i've further refined my watch order list for Babylon 5. This is the exact order, down to the episode, you should watch B5 in if it's your first time, or first time in a long while ;). This is the best order for dramatic suspense, and the order in which the show is meant to be seen; it is not however, a chronological order of events in the show, for good reason. If you skip around you will easily ruin the suspense and mystery of the show.

Pilot Movie 1 - "The Gathering"
Season 1 - "Signs and Portents"
Season 2 - "The Coming of Shadows"
Season 3 - "Point of No Return"
Season 4 - "No Surrender, No Retreat" Episodes 1-9 ("The Hour of the Wolf" - "Atonement")
Movie 2 - "In the Beginning"
Season 4 - "No Surrender, No Retreat" Episodes 10-15 ("Racing Mars" - "No Surrender, No Retreat")
Movie 3 - "Thirdspace"
Season 4 - "No Surrender, No Retreat" Episodes 16-22 ("The Exercise of Vital Powers" - "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars")
Season 5 - "The Wheel of Fire" Episodes 1-21 ("No Compromises" - "Objects at Rest")
Movie 4 - "River of Souls"
Movie 5 - "A Call to Arms"
Season 5 - "The Wheel of Fire" Episode 22 ("Sleeping in Light")
Spinoff Series - "Crusade"
Movie 6 - "To Live and Die in Starlight (Legend of the Rangers)"

You're not the only one having withdrawals. Luckily Star Gate SG-1, Altantis, Star Trek Enterprise, and Heroes are tying me over for now.

^^^I tried watching Heros and missed a couple of episodes so now I'm lost. I figure I will wait for the DVD's to come out and watch it all at once.

nwdavis, those spacebattle clips were awesome! When I was a kid we had to dream about stuff like that. Crazy. Although I think the battlestars would fare better than that--they have nukes!

You can watch Heroes online so you can get caught up. This Monday is the Season Finale for Heroes. Those space battle clips are awesome. Have watched the battles as well? I use to dream about stuff like that too. One time I was in the middle of a Star Wars novel, watched Babylon 5 and Star Trek TNG and had a dream with all three mixed together. What a nerd!!

Can't wait for more Battlestar Galactica. I love Laura Roslin and Apollo, and Starbuck.
