Time for action - real decision making. Not just second guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking

Are they up to it?

Will Nancy Pelosi use her power to waste valuable time investigating the Bush Admin or instead put forth an agenda that she/her party believe will benefit the country.

Will Charlie Rangel spend more time decorating Cheney's old office than figuring out how to finance the govt?

Will they push for a deadline to pull out of Iraq? or reduce funding?

Tough tough decisions to make - and the Dems will have to make them - or appear just as ineffective as the Republicans

i think the problem is that he really hasn't any idea of how to fix the problem without looking like he is succumbing to political pressure

and bush is many things, but one thing he is first and foremost is an adept politician. He will do nothing that may compromise his authority, what little there is left, anyway.

Hey Chance, try calming down and accept what is. The economy is good? You haven't read the figures I read. Decimating the budget and putting our country in debt does not make for a "good" economy. It's been artificially stimulated for the election. (Notice the gasoline prices drop recently?) Do some research and quit whining like a little kid that takes his toys and runs home to Mommy.

Quite. Your side lost, chance1, you are in the extreme, your party is in minority status. Nowadays, chance1, your president can't by a snot rag using federal dollars without presenting appropriate paperwork to a Democratic Congress, and they will either agree, or disagree, with his request.

Meanwhile, Chance is right: the spotlight will be on the Democrats now. They've bad-mouthed Bush (I heard Pelosi eating some of her past words, today), but now they won't be able to blame anyone without including themselves, for what comes from here out. But since it's holiday time soon, there won't be anyone to point the finger at except... oh, right, His Executive Shrubberiness, who thinks he really can cut down the mightiest tree in the forest with a herring. But he can do a few things that will make things easier once Congress congregates again, such as appoint people that need appointing, and skip the vast wasting of time from the inevitable partisan harrassment of nominees that both parties these days seem to think is what confirmation hearings are for.
But we'll see. Personally, I wouldn't mind if a freak earthquake jiggled the swamp to jello and sucked D.C. and all of Congress right into the muck; I agree entirely with the sentiments of Benjamin Franklin, who complained that God could have sent a flood, or a pestilence, or an earthquake, but he sent Congress.

Your point that what you wish for can haunt is of course reasonable as we know from life. But it it is not invariably true. Pelosi and the House Dem leadership will not have to do much to drastically improve the way the House is run - restoring debate on the House floor - something Hastert did away with - will be a start. The Senate Dem leadership is in experienced capable hands and it will be great to see intelligent leadership on the Senate committees.

My guess is we will see mor consensus the next two years than we have seen in a number of years, and some real work will get done - maybe all vetoed by Bush - but setting the stage for 2008 when the Dems retake the White House after two years of responsible Democratic leadership in the Congress.

While I am a Democrat, I think it's important for everyone to remember that the 'mess' (in every sense of the word as it relates to the US) was NOT created overnight and will not and can not be corrected overnight.

If nothing else, I think the American people have finally 'woken up' about their own responsibility to vote and ensure that the government we have and the one they want are the same. For too long, as a people, we have shown FAR too much apathy towards the politics of the country, and look where it got us.

First off I agree with Tx that this is Bush's war and the dems controling congress won't change that. Perhaps as Seapuppy suggested Bush had kept congress more in the loop it would be different but once things go wrong its too late to share responsibility.

Before the election whenever Bush said the dems have no plan for Iraq in my mind that translated to "see I f**cked it up so badly that no one can fix it"

But, aside from the voters voicing their desire to get out of Iraq, we're not going anywhere until we're confident the oil has been secured. To believe otherwise is to ignore the last 80yrs of U.S. foreign policy. Whatever anyone thinks of the dems rest assured they love oil too.

And Seapuppy I'm sure the republicans will hit the dems on extending the Bush tax cuts because thats politics but lets not forget that those same republicans refused to extend them when they had the opportunity. As a matter of fact they still can extend them during the lameduck congress and the fact that they won't should render all their blasting of the dems hollow.

As for democracy being compatable with Islam as Mr. Chavez, Mr. Ortega and Mr. Morales can attest its only compatable with american values when our guy wins.

Of course the economy is strong, else it could not take the abuse it is taking now.

A 50% increase in the national debt in five years? Sure, that's really good for the economy.

The economy is strong in spite of, not because of Republican policies.

If you are doing well in this economy, you live on the other side of the tracks from me.

There was a time when the companies listed on the Stock Exchange were American companies, when what was good for the Stock Market was good for America, and vice versa.

Now, the stockholders of those companies are no longer nearly all American.

The loyalty of a corporate Board of Directors is, rightfully, to their stockholders, not to the USA, and that re-orientation will only become more obvious and problematic with every year that goes by, no matter what our Government does.

In the meanwhile, high-end department stores are doing very well, while discounters are reporting disappointing earnings.

In the meanwhile, teachers, nurses, firemen and policemen in my own city cannot afford to buy a house.

The primary overall mistakes in invading Iraq were two;

We should have waited until we had recovered from the recession.

Pelosi's idea of red-hot issues is taxing oil companies' "windfall profits" and having federal health programs negotiate lower prices with the drug companies. Big whoop.

The Dems can investigate anything they want, and probably will, just as the Reps have been doing for 12 years (remember Whitewater & Monica?). But since no legislation ever seems to come out of these investigations, they're really just a way to get air space on CNN and waste everybody's time (a non-partisan comment).

As for Iraq, Congress could conceivably pass something similar to the War Powers Resolution that put an end to the Vietnam war, but of course they couldn't override the inevitable veto.

In fact Dems aren't going to be able to do much with the narrow majority they hold, without the cooperation of the Reps. So look for two years of lotsa talk, not much action, except for a few token gestures to make themselves feel good.

PS And you can be sure the word "gay" will not be heard in the halls of Congress either, unless another numskull gets outed. This Congress will not consider any legislation expanding gay rights. You read it here first.

There is little more Congress could do for gay rights even if they wanted to.
