People at work were talking about this and I got a little uncomfortable. Do I really have to worry about this? Should I vacuum my mattress? They are harmless, correct? Bedbugs are a nuisance, but not a danger to our health. I remember getting grossed out at a Dateline story about bedbugs and how ugly and dirty they are. I wash my mattress cover, any other tips. This really bugs me...LOL.

if you had bedbugs you would notice the bites.

and then you would understand why people would rather burn their bed instead of sleeping in it again ;)

My old apartment building had an infestation and I kid you not it was the most traumatic experience of my life. Just seeing the title of this thread made me feel like I had them crawling on my body. It's been a couple years since then and I have moved, yet the other day I still freaked out when I saw a red speck on my sheet (which turned out to be fuzz from a towel thank god haha).

They don't live in just your bed either. Any dark area is fine for them as long as there is a host nearby (which happens to be your sleeping body). Gross.

I just read an article on Yahoo news last week about bed bugs. You can bring home bed bugs from anywhere. Coworkers bring them to work, there in fitting rooms in stores, and many hotels.

I was talking to a coworker about it who said he got them on a brand new mattress that was delivered. They haul away the old mattresses in the same truck they deliver new ones in. How many of the old mattresses had bed bugs?

Bed bugs has come up a lot for me lately. I work in group homes and some of the agencies are reporting outbreaks. I work in the middle of the night and I am sure the sofa is infested. I get these hives at least twice a month and this pic is from Friday. I also get what seems like mosquito bites all over my body. I dress like it's winter at work and even wear a hood. But they got my neck. I have looked up bed bugs and you can see them. I have been getting bit for about a year now and have yet to see anything. I even tore the sofa apart. I can feel the burning or bite as it happens but see nothing. When the hives are coming out you wanna run straight into a wall it hurts so bad and is so itchy. I just did a whole facebook post on this since it happened Friday. I am not sure what to think. I am going nuts dealing with these bites and hives. I have gotten hives on my chest, stomach, legs, and now neck. It won't stop and I still have no visual on one bug at work. It's frustrating. I'm sure whatever it is I have dragged it home with me but I don't get hives at home. You really can see bed bugs. Look them up. They are pretty big. So confused.

The best way to tell is if you have blood spots on your pillow or sheets when you wake up in the morning. When my apartment building was fumigated that's how the exterminator checked to see if you were infested. They don't actually look for the bug because during the day or with any lights on, they are impossible to find. It's like fighting a ghost or something, it's awful. I didn't even have any visible bites because apparently some people don't have a reaction to the saliva that the bug excretes. Another person in the buiding thiough had bites all over her arms.

I've had them too in my old apartment.. the bites didn't cause any swelling, but I was constantly covered with tiny red bite-marks. Occasionally I also had a series of bloody dots along the veins of my arms and legs. Like a person who shoots up heroin.

I too never saw any actual bug, nor did I ever feel them biting.

These things were eradicated long ago with DDT and other pesticides that have since been outlawed. Now they are back. From what I have read, the only way to get rid of these pests is to call an expert. It is scary to know that they might be in new mattresses.

I would rather get bit by a bedbug than a mosquito any day. You can't get sick from bedbugs, a mosquito can make you very sick.

I love nature overall, but insects can be so alien. Anything parasitic will automatically make me want to run. I can deal with mosquitoes, but that's it. The only insects that I really enjoy seeing are lady bugs, butterflies, and dragonflies.

If you got bit up by mosquitoes like I do you wouldn't say that. My ankles and hands get covered in them and it's really uncomfortable. They will even bit the back of my head. I had this problem my whole life. I thought living in AZ it wouldn't be as bad but it's worse. They bite all year round.

All these stories have scared the shit out of me.

Here's a tip, take flea powder and coat the sofa with it, really thick, then cover it with a sheet for a few days(three tops), remove the sheet and vacuum the sofa. Repeat as neccessary.

I was given this beautiful living room set years ago, very expensive but infested with bed bugs, this did the trick in just two applications...

I wish I could try that but the sofa is at work.
