Because unlike small niche political parties with no national power, we have to compromise what we want with what can stand to win a national election, and not just our personal pet picks. Hillary probably wouldn't be in my personal top 5 or possibly even 10 list if it were just up to me personally. But the ones who'd be ahead of her on the list are too leftist for 50.1% of America to vote for.
^Kirsten Gillibrand would be far better than Hillary Clinton. It's the "dinosaurs" of the Democratic Party and the "liberal" Wall St. elite touting Hillary when there are far better candidates out there for Democrats.

I don't know if that's the case so much as Hillary is out touting Hillary and few other people have the name recognition or portfolio to knock her out of a seeming default choice. Hillary's been angling for this for many years and is very well known. It's always possible for someone like Obama to rise from the junior ranks of the party and suddenly gain mainstream momentum, Obama himself proved that. But that would be a variable we couldn't really predict at this point.
