Bernie isn't radical. If politicians hadn't been moving constantly to the right (after JFK), Bernie would be mainstream.
True, but in American politics he is. His policies are known to work, and they are normal in Europe (single payer health care), but aren't here. We live in the real world, not the world we want it to be. The US has never healed from the Red Scare, and from the looks of things probably never will, so long as the moneme "soc-" is perceived negatively by critical parts of the electorate, e.g. suburbs of swing states.
