Best gift you've ever received?

The best gift I've ever received was the electric typewriter that my parents bought me as a high school graduation present in 1981.

REMEMBER, this was well before the advent of personal computers. It was a Royal Aristocrat with a special ribbon that was half black, and half correction tape. I typed all of my undergrad papers on it.

I dug it out of the closet a couple of years ago, and brought it down to one of the last office machine service places left, to have it cleaned and oiled. It still works like a charm, although I have been using a computer for word processing for almost 20 years now.

Besides money? My mother once gave me a very fat check after her mother-in-law kicked the bucket and left her a tidy lump sum ($10k), and Mother splurged over Christmas. But money, though terribly useful, doesn't show much thought.

So I think the most thoughtful gift (and therefore the best) I've ever received was from my best friend Caroline.

One day we were out window-shopping, and I saw a sweater at Banana Republic that I just loved... aubergine cashmere v-neck, on sale for only $50. But I resisted, I was broke and I couldn't afford it, so instead of charging it to the Grandmother's card like I usually do, I behaved myself and left the sweater on the rack.

Caroline went back for it the next day, but it was gone, so she got on the horn and tracked down a location that still had one in my size, schlepped out to Stonestown Galleria on the farthest end of San Francisco to get it, made them bring out every one they had so she could compare them, and bought it for me. She gave it to me on my sobriety birthday, and I cried.

She makes me wear that sweater every occasion we have, now.

I would have to say the ring my boyfriend gave me when we were together. He was very much in denial about being gay and even our relationship. He was a big cowboy type from Montana and let's just say his emotional side was missing. He made real progress while we were together for three years and him just shopping for a ring was hard for me to believe. I know it was hard for him to buy that ring and I'll always cherish it.

friendship from the guy in my sig :D

Materialistically: Nothing really stands out... :/ (that's probably because I have a HORRIBLE memory from all the drinknig I do every day and all the other hsit I used to do (even before all that I had a really bad memory too) though).

In terms of material possesions, I would have to say it is the EvolveFish I recieved from my friend in North-Carolina. Another one is the model kit of the IJN Yamato I recieved from my dad.
