Best New Artist: Colbie Caillat

For months now the Best New Artist shoe-ins have certainly been Gym Class Heroes, Amy Winehouse and Daughtry.

But Colbie Caillat has garnered so much buzz and incredible airplay in the airplay world that is dominated by gangsta rap and hoochie mamas. I am sure there will be a lot of boos against "Bubbly," comparing Caillat as the new Celine Dion. Who cares? I doubt she does. Her song rises to No. 7 on the Hot 100 this week. Pop music just might be making a comeback afterall ...

 
having only listened to 'bubbly', and having no desire whatsoever to listen to anything else from her album, i feel compelled to ask....why does anyone think she has any talent?

the song is basic, no real harmony, nothing complicated to it, and not even meaningful

i'll take secondhand serenade any day

I agree.

I think people think she has talent just because acoustic music as a single is rare to find nowadays; everything is either saturated with big beats and overproduction or is just too noisy to listen to. So I guess she "stands out" in the mainstream crowd, but I've heard much better local talent, singing much better songs with much more passion.

And you're right, the song isn't even meaningful. It's all been said before, in better ways too.

I write music that I don't think people necessarily talk/write about (visit my myspace page!) and I'm proud of that; it sets me apart than a lot of other musicians. Oh, plus I'm gay too, haha!

The Song Is So Dull, And Boring, And Generic! The Only Original, And unique Song ive heard this Year is "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse, It has Become One Of The biggest and Most memorable hits of The year
 
Oh she is the one who sings Bubbly, i have been hearing that song on the radio but had no idea who was singing nor had any desire to find out but its good to put a face to the "voice." Its forgettable though.

LOL its just like Fiest i never knew who sang, 1234 until tonight. I heard the song in commercials but just found out who was singing.
 
I remember "Bubbly" was the free iTunes song of the week a few months ago, and she blew up right after. I never really got her appeal.
 
I love Colbie. Been listening to her for quite awhile now. Saw her live a few weeks ago for the first time and she was great. My friend is actually working with her right now on new tracks. i don't think she is like the most amazing, but i like this kind of music and its good chill music.

New Celine Dion? Maybe the new Lisa Loeb or Natalie Imbruglia or Jewel, but Celine Dion?

I think Bubbly is okay, but nothing special. I'll give her next single a chance. I saw her at a radio-station sponsored event a couple of weeks ago and she was pretty good--well, she sounded exactly like she does on the recorded version. I got a really bad attitude vibe from her and one of her guitar players though (especially the guitar player).

Which guitar player? The one with the dreads is Justin Young...who you should check out his solo music on his myspace...i dig his stuff...and the other guitar player is Tim Fagan...who won some contest a few years ago to write a song with John Mayer...I forget what magazine ran that contest...but his solo stuff is just alright. And as for Colbie...the only impression i've ever gotten from her is that she is a very lowkey person...which can sometimes come off as a bitchiness.....people sometimes at first meeting me I can be really shy which I think sometimes comes off as like snobby or bitchy...but it really isn't...I don't get bitchy till you get to know me...lol
 
Yeah I suppose my Celine Dion comparison does sound a little unsual but I was basically trying to familiarize myself with who Caillat's fanbase consists of ..

And I'm sensing it is that of the easy-listening genre.

I work at Border's Books + Music and a lof of the same kinda crowd (soccer moms, Oprah addicts) that buy the Josh Groban and Michael Buble products, are also buying up Caillat's No. 5 hit album, "Coco." They come in reciting the lyrics to "Bubbly" ... "it starts in my toes, and I crinkle my nose"

And those "moms" are nothing to make light of. Next week "Bubbly" jumps from No. 7 to 5 on the Hot 100. Neither fellow newbies Amy Winehouse nor Feist have been able to hit top 5 with their debut singles.

I thought she sort of like a female Jack Johnson...or maybe that's because he has a song called "Bubble Toes."

But I don't think it's fair to compare CC with Amy Winehouse or Feist, b/c they aren't technically newbies. And CC's "mom" market is very different from AW or Feist's.
 
Yeah Whatever -- Jack Johnson is another one of those easy-listening artists the Caillat fanbase is probably made of (hi Sarah McLachlan, Il Divo, etc.).

And as for a comparison, it wasn't in the genre sense: Just overall for new artists in 2007. Although Winehouse and Feist (along with a huge list of contendors include The Plain White T's), have never received Grammy recognition for past work, all of the aforementioned are eligible for best new artist contention.

My comparison was based on chart performance. Although Keri Hilson hit the top 5 with her Timbaland collaboration "The Way I Are," Colbie Caillat is technically the only debut solo female artist of 2007 to hit the top 5.

It was Tim Fagan. It wasn't horrible... just the fact that they did a soundcheck in the middle of the show (which no one else did) and something about him just rubbed me the wrong way.

During the interview portion, they kept bringing up the fact that she was discovered on MySpace and that's the reason she was able to spend no money to get discovered and that, really, anyone could do it. They kept glossing over the fact that her parents are in the music business and a friend of her father's--who just happened to be a producer--produced her demo for free and let her use his studio for free.
 
yeah Mikal Blue is her producer(my friend works at his studio with him now)...but yeah Colbie's dad produced Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours"...so he's a pretty big player in music....but she did find the success from Myspace...she got featured in Rolling Stone because of her myspace success and right after that was signed...so I don't think you can really equate her dad's success with how she got discovered by her fans.

Oh, I agree. My point was just that most people can't have their "demo" produced by a professional producer and recorded in a nice studio. But, yes the marketing side of it is another story all together.
 
Yeah, the song is nice, but just a bit average.

Just because she has a unique, acoustic sound won't necessarily help her at the Grammys. Remember last year? Imogen Heap (although she wasn't really a "new" artist) had probably the most unique, stand-out style for "Hide & Seek). But, alas, Grammy went to Carrie (which is fine in my book!)
 
The pop chart has been saturated with songs about promiscuity, london bridges and pushing buttons over the past couple of years and those are just songs by women (let's not even go to the explicit rap songs that radio seems to find passable nowadays).

I just find it really optimistic and refreshing that a simple little song about falling in love can make it's way to the top five pop singles chart. That's all.

Just goes to show that a good song and a good voice never go out of style.
