I've lived in Honolulu and Los Angeles, and would choose either of them, but if you require affordability, forget those two.
I've also lived in Seattle, and I'm now in Portland. I'd recommend either, with Portland getting the edge for being more affordable, and being a place where you could live car-free, if you wanted.
Oh, if your income is high, maybe Seattle would be better, since Washington state doesn't have an income tax. And if your income is low, I'd say Portland, since Oregon doesn't have a sales tax.
No other place in the country compares to these four cities. Not too much heat, little or no snow, no summer humidity, cool people.
